Day 1: Hoanib River

On your arrival you'll transfer to the camp and get settled in to your room for the next four nights, (three night stay is also available). In the afternoon (depending on the weather conditions) drive to Hoanib Riverbed, Amspoort and President's Waterhole before sundowners and a night drive home. Look out for elephant, giraffe, gemsbok and springbok.

In the evening an illustrated orientation talk on the Palmwag Concession and the Skeleton Coast with reference to the following morning's flight route.

Daily scheduled activities change now and again due to fog and the local weather conditions, wildlife whereabouts and availability of researchers, but in general each day will be filled with two different sessions of activities. These notes are a guideline to the activities you will experience but not always in the same order as on this itinerary.

Day 2: Hoanib River

If the weather is clear enough you'll take a scenic Skeleton Coast flight to Mowe Bay showcasing the dramatic landscape. From Mowe Bay drive to the seal colony then either to view shipwreck debris or head south to Hoanib Mouth and Klein Oase. Wildlife to be spotted en-route may include gemsbok, black-backed jackal and potentially lion or brown hyaena.

In the afternoon, fly back to camp, glance down on the seal colony, Suiderkus wreck, dune fields, Auses Spring and the Hoanib floodplains from the air.

Expert tips

Evening time could be filled with a pre-dinner presentation on the unique desert adapted lion and other research in the area. These talks depend on the availability of the researchers.

Day 3: Hoanib River

Drive south over gravel plains to Mudorib Spring, taking in fascinating scenery and wildlife. Return to camp for lunch. Afternoon game drive to Hoanib Riverbed and then downstream to Hoanib Floodplains in search of elephant and giraffe - and maybe even lion.

Expert tips

Hoanib is located in the far north of the Palmwag Concession, home to the Save the Rhino Trust (SRT). The chances of seeing rhino are very slim in this area however, due to the distance from the more heavily populated rhino areas.

Day 4: Hoanib River

Step out and stretch your legs on a morning walk or possibly combine it with a game drive. Return to camp for lunch. Another afternoon game drive followed by amazing sundowners out on the dunes. Head back to camp at dusk enjoying a night drive en-route to check out the nocturnal activity. Arriving back just in time for dinner.

Expert tips

The camp is scenically located between two tributaries of the Hoanib River and driving along the river's edge is always productive in terms of seeing birds, mammals and the unique desert adapted plants.

Day 5: End of Itinerary

This morning you'll transfer to the airstrip, leaving at a pre-arranged time which will be advised in camp. There is no road access into the camp so all incoming and outgoing guests arrive and depart on scheduled charter flights to the camp airstrip. The cost of these flights is included in the price.

Expert tips

Luggage limits are restricted to 20kgs on these charter flights. Its possible to arrange to store extra luggage in Windhoek on your arrival or just pack light!
