Beyond the bush, the escarpment rises. A day trip from Shiviko onto the Panorama Route trades the wildlife-watching pace of a game drive for the drama of Mpumalanga's high country, cliffs, canyons, and views that fall away for miles.

The route threads through some of the country's most photographed scenery. God's Window opens onto a drop into the lowveld below, the mist rolling through the forest like something out of an old story. Bourke's Luck Potholes show what centuries of water and rock can carve into stone. Blyde River Canyon, one of the largest green canyons on earth, unfolds in layers of cliff and forest and river far below.

It's a full day away from camp, at a different rhythm to the bush, but it rounds out the Lowveld experience: after days spent low in the valley tracking wildlife, the Panorama Route lifts guests up and out, for a view of the country they've been exploring from a completely different vantage point.

Shiviko sits on the doorstep of one of the world's great wildernesses. From the villa, guides take guests through the gates and into Kruger National Park itself, where the sightings are unscripted and the landscape stretches further than the eye can follow. Morning drives catch the bush waking up, animals moving to water while the light is still soft. Afternoon drives chase the golden hour, ending as the sun drops low over the mopane and acacia.

Every drive is different. Kruger's roads wind through open savannah, riverine forest, and rocky koppies, home to the full spectrum of African wildlife, from the Big Five to the smaller, stranger creatures that reward a patient eye.
