The walk will end around 9:30 a.m. and include a 30-minute break for a delicious breakfast, accompanied by juice, sandwich, and hot coffee. The circuit trail combines areas of tree-planting, a forest gallery near an important river in the region, a forest in regeneration where there are pastures with open areas and small streams that allow the observation of open-area birds, aquatic birds, and birds of forested habitats. Among the most common birds in this place are the Great Kiskadee (Pitangus Sulphuratus), the Yellow Tyrannulet (Capsiempis Flaveola), the Montezuma Oropendola (Psarocolius Montezuma), the Wing-barred seedeater (Sporophila Americana), the Tropical Kingbird (Tyrannus Melancholicus), the Red-billed Pigeon (Patagioenas Flavirostris), and the Groove-billed Ani (Crotophaga Sulsirostris). In addition to these, you can observe less common resident species, such as the Slaty spinetail, which elaborates a nest with an impressive platform of twigs. The Laughing Falcon (Herpetotheres Cachinnans) is a large hawk whose presence is an indicator of a healthy environment. Its diet depends on snakes, which feed on frogs, rodents, lizards, birds, and other snakes. It is also possible to sight Black-cheeked Woodpeckers (Melanerpes Pucherani) and Guianan Trogons (Trogon Violaceus).

Ecoterra Costa Rica Birdwatching at Juan Castro Blanco Cloud Forest

The tour begins at 5 am from La Fortuna, to arrive at the trails by 6 am the ideal time to observe the bird´s activity. After a 3 hour walk through the forest and the open areas, we will return to our starting point to enjoy some fresh coffee, sandwiches, and juice before returning to La Fortuna. Once there, we will begin our hike on the Quetzal trail, which combines forested areas with open areas where we can often observe species like: the Common Bush-tanager (Chlorospingus Ophthalmicus), Slate-throated Redstart (Myioborus Miniatus), Black-faced Solitaire (Myadestes Melanops), a cloud forest bird with a beautiful and very distinctive song, the Gray-breasted Wood-Wren (HenicorhinaLeucophrys) and the Purple-throated Mountain-Gem (Lampornis Calolaemus). Other less common species found on this Trail include; the Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus Mocinno) considered the most beautiful bird in the continent and frequently compared to the birds of Paradise for its stunning colors. The best time of the year to spot Quetzals is from February to May, in their mating and nesting season.

Ecoterra Costa Rica Birdwatching at Arenal Hanging Bridges

Our tour begins in your hotel around 5:30 am, to arrive at the Arenal Hanging Bridges at 6:00 am. The circuit trail combines the rainforest with hanging and stationary bridges to offer you amazing views from the tree canopy, and allow for excellent opportunities for bird watching. At 09:30 am, we will complete the tour and take a break to enjoy a box breakfast of a sandwich, juice and coffee. Among the most popular birds found in this area are Chestnut-mandibled Toucan (Ramphastos Swainsonii), Broad-billed Motmot (Electron Platyrhynchum), White-fronted Nunbird (Monasa Morphoeus), Rofous-tailed Jacamar (Galbula Ruficauda), and White-collared Manakin (Manacus Candei).

Our tour departs at 5:15 am from your hotel, to enter the reserve at 5:30 am. The tour fill end around 9:30 am and includes breakfast, sandwich, juice and coffee. The species you can find in this trail include: Gray-headed Chachalaca (Ortalis Cinereiceps), Eastern Wood Pewee (Contopus Virens), Keel billed Toucan (Ramphastos Sulfuratus), the Cinnamon Becard (Pachyramphus Cinnamomeus), the Olive Tanager (Chlorothraupis Carmioli), the Wedge-billed Woodcreeper (Glyphorhynchus Spirurus), Stripe breasted Wren (Thryothorus Thoracicus) and the Montezuma Oropendola (Psarocolius Montezuma). Some less frequently spotted species include Keel-billed Motmot (Electron Carinatum), Bronze-tailed Plumeleteer (Chalybura Urochrysia), The White Hawk (Leucopternis Albicolis), Emerald Tanager (Tangara Florida), Golden Hooded Tanager (Tangara Larvata), Bayheaded Tanager (Tangara Gyrola), Yellow Margined Flycatcher (Talmomyias Assimilis), Black headed Nightingale (Catharus Mexicanus) and The Whitefronted Nunbird (Monasa Morphoeus),which gets its name from the colors of its feathers which resemble a nun’s habit.

Ecoterra Costa Rica Birdwatching at Arenal Lake & Peninsula Trail

(OPTIONAL)

Our tour leaves your hotel around 5:30 am to arrive to this Trail by 6 am. After our hike, we will take a short recess for a light breakfast followed by a boat ride on the Arenal Lake, to return to your hotel around 10:30 am The advantage of this trail is that it is rarely transited and it is ideal for bird watching due to its combination or tropical rainforest and open grasslands in the proximity of the large Arenal Lake. We will walk the trails and observe a variety of birds for 2 hours. It is very common to observe species like the Olive Sparrow (Arremonops Rufivirgatus), Variable Seedeater (Sporophila Aurita), Olive Tanager (Chlorothraupis Carmioli) and The Buff-rumped Warbler (Phaeothlypis Fulvicauda). Afterwards we will enjoy our breakfast , you will have an excellent view of the Arenal Volcano and the Arenal Lake. After the breakfast we will board a motorized boat for 45 minutes around the edges of the lake to search for aquatic birds.

Ecoterra Costa Rica Birdwatching at Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge

This tour departs La Fortuna around 5 am, with the destination of Los Chiles; a small town locates about 100 kilometers from La Fortuna, and just 10 minutes by boat from the Costa Rica – Nicaraguan border. Here, in Los Chiles, we will board a motorized boat, driven by an experienced local driver in order to begin our Bird watching. In Rio Frio, we will spend about 4 hours on the boat including a 30 minutes break to enjoy some sandwiches and coffee. At 10:30 am. We will begin our return to La Fortuna, to arrive around noon. Some species that are common to spot in this area include: the Anhinga (Anhinga Anhinga), the Great Egret (Ardea Alba), Neotropical Cormorant (Phalachrocorax Brasilianus), Pasarinii’s tanager (Ramphocelus Passerinii), Amazon kingfisher (Chloroceryle Amazona), Green Heron (Butorides Virescens) and the Great Kiskadee (Pitangus Sulphuratus). In addition, Caño Negro is visited by migratory birds which can be seen from September until late may, such as: Great-Blue Heron (Ardea Herodias), Little Blue Heron (Egretta Caerulea), Spotted Sandpiper (Actitis Macularius), Baltimore Oriole (Icterus Galbula), and the Summer Tanager (Piranga Rubra).

Ecoterra Costa Rica Birdwatching at EcoCenter Danaus

This bird watching tour in Ecocentrro Danaus begins at 5:45 am from your hotel. It is a short 10 minutes drive to reach the trailhead and begin our walk at 6:00 am. We will be done around 9:30 am after a delicious box breakfast of a sandwich and juice to recharge our batteries. This interesting sanctuary is relatively small (about 3 hectares), yet it combines tropical gardens with a rainforest in recuperation, and an artificial lake where it is possible to observe a large colony of night herons, also known as Boat-billed Heron (Cochlearius Cochlearius). This colony is the only permanent one known of in the country and is able to be visited all year long. It is also very easy to observe species like caiman, agoutis, sloths, and many species of butterflies. Aside from the Chocuaco, it is common to see observe The Passerini’s Tanager (Ramphocelus Passerinii), Blue –gray Tanager (Thraupis Episcopus), Green Heron (Butorides Virescens), Rofous-tailed Hummingbird (Amazilia Tzacatl), Gray necked wood rail (Aramides Cajanea), Gray headed Chachalaca (Ortalis Cinereiceps) and White tipped Dove (Leptotila Verreauxi).
