Wilderness Mombo

Highlights

  • Arguably the best year-round game-viewing destination in Botswana, with exceptional predator-prey sightings.
  • The annual inundation forms a natural barrier that confines the animals to Mombo’s private wilderness area, while the remarkable concentration of big cats during summer, when the prey species have their young, means that Mombo is rightly known as the ‘Place of Plenty’ for its all-year wildlife abundance.
  • Award-winning responsible-luxury safari camp in the heart of the magnificent Delta.

Destination: A beacon of conservation tourism, Wilderness Mombo leaves a light footprint in Botswana’s wild, wonderful Moremi Game Reserve. This part of the Okavango Delta is renowned for exceptional game viewing, particularly in summer when all manner of species congregate naturally here. With its mix of habitats attracting large herds, followed by predators in vast numbers and variety, discover why Mombo is truly the ‘Mother of all Camps’. Pristine floodplains, meandering channels and palm-fringed islands make up the Eden that is the Okavango Delta – a UNESCO World Heritage site where the water is so pure and clear, you can drink it.

Experience: Sightings at Wilderness Mombo are unparalleled. Encounter healthy populations of predators, sizeable elephant and buffalo herds and an abundance of ungulates. Close-up wildlife encounters in or near camp or at the hide are common, but nothing beats the thrill of out-of-camp game-viewing here – whether by vehicle or from a helicopter (additional costs apply).

Meals at Mombo are designed with conservation in mind, made with healthy ingredients sourced as locally as possible.

Days at Wilderness Mombo end with tranquil evenings on the deck and nights under the stars.

Purpose: For decades, Wilderness Mombo has been a beacon of conservation tourism, supporting local communities and setting the standard of leading truly sustainable safaris.

Wildlife: The region around Wilderness Mombo is known as the ‘Place of Plenty’ by the local Bayei people. From big cats to never-ending herds of antelope, elephant and buffalo, massive concentrations of plains game and predators call this region of the Delta home.  Sometimes, Africa’s rarer species reveal themselves, too. Catch a glimpse of a pangolin or honey badger, or the packs of wild dogs and cheetah coalitions that roam freely through the area. Over 400 species of birds flock to the Okavango Delta, including specials like the Pel’s fishing owl and endangered wattled cranes.

Wilderness Mombo: Rebuilt in 2018, our flagship camp maintains the spirit of the original African safari, and continues to garner numerous awards and accolades with its refurbishment. Repurposing original material and using added natural elements, with a minimal human footprint and 100% solar status, Wilderness Mombo has thoroughly maintained the integrity of its pristine surrounds.

Wild fig trees and mangosteens tower over the elevated guest tents – spacious canvas suites perched on wooden decks – positioned perfectly to watch the wildlife parade on the floodplain beyond.
