Dundee is known for its rich history of many great battles fought. Battlefield sites such as Rorkes drift, Isandlwane, Blood River / Ncome and Fugitive Drift are all in close proximity.

Local tour guides specialising in the military history and Zulu culture will tell the story to come alive ...... a must to absorb the atmosphere and enriching experience of these significant world historic battles.

This is where the Anglo Boer War of 1899 - 1902 began and the Talana Musuem has superb exhibits on the battles of the area.

Dundee "city"

Dundee, was named by Peter Smith, in memory of his links with Scotland.

"The Dundee Story" is a self-guided or guided tour in centre of town of historical buildings with historical connection date back over 100 years.

Dundee has long connections with mining, military conflict and a rich and varied history.

Visit Talana museum with a display of the coal mine industry. Talana museum also has an exquisite glass collection and Peter Smith's home and farm steading and much more.

Tours specializing in the military history, Zulu culture, game viewing, hunting, birding fishing, hiking and trails are all on offer.

Today Dundee area is noted for its agricultural industry, particularly dairy, beef and game ranching.

Dundee is and excellent central base for visits to Rorkes Drift, Isandlwana, Fugitives Drift, Blood River / Ncome, Maria Ratschitz and a host of other interesting sites.

Spend a couple of days in the area absorbing the atmosphere, rich traditions, cultural history that come alive with tales by local tour guide.

Annual events in Dundee and area

2017

5 August Gandhi Walk:
a 5km walk that begins and ends in the grounds of the Talana Musum commemorates the involvement of Mahatma Gandhi in our area and in South Africa.

7 October Mine Workers Walk
a 10km walk in memory of the 7000 zulu mine workers who walked back to Natal at the outbreak of the Anglo Boer war in October 1899.

20/21 October - Talana Ghost Walk
On the anniversary of the battle follow in the footsteps of the British soldiers in a guided walk. start 17:15 in the cemetery at Talana Museum.

1 - 31 December: Christmas in Africa
Extravaganza of Christmas light throughout the grounds of Talana Museum. Museum grounds open until 8:30pm daily. Bring an evening picnic and enjoy the lights with family and friends.
