Antelope Park

Lion Walk

Would you ever have thought it possible to stroll through the African bush with a free-roaming lion at your side? Take a walk on the wild side at Antelope Park as you join our lions while they explore their natural habitat each day. Experienced guides and handlers will lead you on early morning or afternoon walks with our cubs, where you can interact with them and get up close to the King of the Beasts. Our professional team of staff will help you make the most of this incredible experience.

A walk will last approximately one and half hours and the lion cubs accompanying you range in age from 6 to 18 months. You might even be fortunate enough to witness them practicing their stalking and hunting skills – or even making a kill!

But your Lion Walk is much more than you think. It‘s not just a very privileged photo opportunity; it‘s the chance for you to become a conservationist.

Antelope Park is home to ALERT and the African Lion Rehabilitation and Release into the Wild programme. Please see www.lionalert.org for more information about how you’ll be making a positive impact on the future of the African Lion.

Important Note: Lion walks are subject to age and height restrictions.

Time: 06h30 or 16h30 daily
Height Restriction: 1.5 metres
Age: 16 years and above
Please Note: Closed walking shoes are compulsory. No bright colours or flimsy, tasseled clothing to be worn on walks.

Stage 2 Lion Research: The NGAMO Pride

Visit a pride of lions in their natural habitat… Our stage 2 release pride comprises 6 adult lionesses, 1 adult male (who is absolutely spectacular) and 5 cubs. This is the pilot release site of our world-first conservation initiative and the cubs born here are the future of our rehabilitation and release programme. The adult lions are collared for research purposes so it’s almost certain you will find them.

From the safety of a caged vehicle, you will accompany our research technician and locate the lions using a telemetry set. It truly is enthralling to watch this pride roaming free in their natural surroundings and observing their interactions with one another. You might be fortunate enough to witness them on a hunt or even making a kill! All proceeds generated from this activity will go to ALERT, enabling further development of the release programme.

Elephant Training

Lions are not the only Big 5 animal here at Antelope Park; you will also be able to meet our four resident elephants, who are absolutely charming. Our African Elephants came to the Park in the early 1990s, when they were rescued from almost certain death during a severe drought. Happily, they now get to spend most of their day grazing around the Park, but even the elephants have to put in a few hours of work everyday. And for our four, the day starts with a 30-minute training session with their handlers, which is essential for control and respect. As a guest, you can join in, and learn about elephant behaviour. It is a very special opportunity to interact with these gentle giants up close and personal.
