Mboko Lodge

A visit to the Congo Basin is a transformational journey into one of the wildest, most isolated, most remote places on the planet. A rainforest second in size only to the Amazon, the Congo is home to more than 400 species of mammals — including the critically endangered Western Lowland Gorilla — 1,000 bird species, 10,000 plant species… and scarcely any outside visitors.

Kamba African Rainforest Experiences (formerly Congo Conservation Co.) operates three lodges in Odzala-Kokoua National Park, creating authentic and deeply personal immersions within a pristine and fragile ecosystem through our signature Kamba Journeys. Our lodges are the only private concessions granted inside the Republic of Congo’s immeasurable national parks, providing a fortunate few with the chance to truly immerse in one of Africa’s last pristine ecosystems. Connecting our various lodges is easy and our Journeys provide guests with safe, stress-free, and enriching ways to follow the footsteps of the great explorers in the Congo Basin.

Mboko Lodge is the home of adventure. The experiences here are a combination of walking, boating and kayaking through some of the Congo Basin’s most beautiful habitats. Explore the Lekoli River by drifting along its winding causeway in a kayak or head upstream in a motorboat to delve deeper into the forests on foot or explore baïs further afield. Travellers spending time at Mboko are spoiled for choice with how to spend their days.

Frequent visitors to Mboko include herds of forest buffalo and the elusive forest elephant. From the elevated dining room, gaze on as the buffalo enjoy a breakfast of their own in the morning mist of the savanna. In the evening, look out into the twilight in search of fireflies and late at night, you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a spotted hyena.

Mboko's 6 guest chalets extend along the banks of a free-flowing tributary of the Lekoli River. Mboko Lodge gives a sense of the scale of Odzala-Kokoua National Park while allowing you to focus on some of the smaller details: colourful flowers and migratory butterflies (depending on the season) can be seen in profusion.

Breath-taking views abound at the interface between tropical rainforest, waterways and grassland savanna, where hundreds of towering termite mounds create an otherworldly experience. The spacious chalets are are dotted amongst the trees lining the Lekoli River offering a private deck with seating area and view of either the forest or river, a spacious interior with double or twin bed configuration, en-suite bathroom with hot shower and flush toilet, mosquito net, and environmentally friendly soaps and shampoos.

The dining room, lounge and bar area looks out upon the wide-open grasslands with the star deck and fire pit an extension of these spacious living areas. Unwind after a day spent walking through the various biomes while watching the sun set over the equatorial jungle or as lightning dances along the horizon..

Mboko Lodge affords spectacular star-viewing opportunities before falling asleep to the sounds of life-giving water flowing past each chalet on its way to meet the Congo River, a haven of peace.
