Quetzal Tour
At Savegre Hotel, you have the best opportunity to find and observe this spectacular bird. The Aztecs believed that the Resplendent Quetzal was the representation of Quetzalcoatl, their supreme god.
One of our guides will take you to the places where the quetzal feeds on aguacatillos, its favorite fruit. A few seconds of observation of the quetzal is enough to appreciate why it is considered the most beautiful species of the American continent.
Tour starts at 5:15am and ends at approximately 7:30am.
Day Tour
We will begin our day of adventure with an exciting ride in safari cars specially designed to explore the mountainous terrain of this region. We will climb aboard and head to the top of the mountain, enjoying ourselves as we admire the natural beauty that surrounds us.
Once at the top, our naturalist guide will take us on a walking tour of the mountain trails. We will discover the rich biodiversity of the region, learn about the local flora and fauna, and hear fascinating stories about the history of this area.
Our next stop will take us to a panoramic viewpoint with spectacular views of the valley. Here we will have the opportunity to take breathtaking photos and appreciate the majesty of nature while enjoying a moment of peace and contemplation.
After enjoying the beauty of the landscape, we will head to Las Bromelias restaurant to enjoy a delicious lunch. Lunch is included in the tour and will feature a selection of dishes prepared with fresh, local ingredients. In addition, everyone will receive a glass of wine to pair with the meal and enhance the culinary experience.
Bird-Watching and Natural History Tour
Bird watching is one of the fastest-growing pastimes with more and more enthusiasts around the world. At Hotel Savegre, you arrive at a place that can offer superlative birding, so much so that San Gerardo de Dota is the only destination in Costa Rica mentioned in the book: Fifty Places to Go Birding Before You Die: Experts Share the World’s Greatest Destinations.
Morning birdsong heralds the start of an unforgettable experience in the cloud forest. During breakfast, the hummingbirds give you an indication of what your excursion will be like.
After meeting your guide at the hotel reception, you set out on your walk. Our bird list has more than 170 species and some are endemic to the zone. Along our trails, you will be able to find the most elusive and hard-to-spot species, real trophies for birders who want to increase their life list.
The tour consists of short walks around the hotel or in our private reserve. Mornings, just after dawn, are the best time for seeing most species

Night Cloud Forest Tour
Discover another side of the cloud forest. Recommended for birders or anyone who wants to experience the forest at night. This tour starts by searching for the Dusky Nightjar in the open ground by the hotel. Then, as the mysterious sounds of the night forest build up after sunset, your guide will help you look for various owl species such as the Bare-shanked Screech-Owl, Mottled Owl and the elusive Unspotted Saw-whet Owl.

Exploring the Paramo Forest
This outing is the gateway to discovering Costa Rica’s newest National Park: Los Quetzales N.P. Decreed a National Park in July, 2005, it covers 5000 hectares (12,350 acres) and includes three forest zones and 14 eco-systems. Its objective is to preserve highland forests and protect the water sources found there.
Find your guide at reception and get ready to explore the Continental Divide separating the eco-systems between North and South America.
Upon arrival, you start by searching for endemic bird species as your guide explains the natural history of this unique area.
After a short walk from where you leave the car, you will discover one of the most impressive panoramas you’ll have ever seen … on the right the Talamanca Cordillera and the volcanoes of the Central Volcanic Cordillera, in front of the central Pacific and a bit to the left the southern Pacific leading towards the Valle del General and the Osa Peninsula and behind you, Chirripó, Costa Rica’s highest peak.

Hiking Tour
A trail that connects the highest point of Buena Vista Mountain, at 3,492 meters above sea level, with the hotel, located at 2,200 meters. This route can be done both uphill, starting from the hotel, and downhill, starting at the summit. On a clear day, it is possible to admire views of the central and southern Pacific, as well as some of the volcanoes of the Cordillera Central, giving the sensation of looking at a life-size map.
During the hike, the ecosystem is explored at different altitudes. If you start from the summit, the trail descends through the subalpine forest, where the vegetation does not grow more than one meter. This area, known as Paramo, is characteristic of the high areas of the Talamanca Mountain Range and the South American Andes. If the route is uphill, the landscape transforms from the cloud forest, with its imposing oak trees and evergreen vegetation, to the Paramo.
Whether uphill or downhill, this unique experience will leave an indelible mark. Approximately five hours after the start, the trail culminates at the hotel, where you can enjoy a drink at the bar or relax with a massage. Total duration varies between 6 and 8 hours.
Horse-Back Riding Tour

Tours start from 8:00am until 3:00pm in a tour that takes place inside the forest on the banks of the Savegre River.
Tour duration:1 hour, 1 hour and 30 minutes or 2 hours.
