This three-bedroom home is ideal for families seeking a serene escape before or after a safari. Nestled on the west side of Lamu, Chuchungi House is one of the few properties on the Kenyan coast offering views of both creek and ocean, looking over the Indian Ocean to the east and the Lamu creek to the west. The house, designed to capture the essence of Lamu's old town and Shela, boasts four floors with panoramic views, ensuring both sunrise and sunset can be enjoyed.

The master bedroom features an en-suite bathroom, while the second double and twin room share a bathroom. The ground floor includes a fully equipped kitchen, a large dining area and spaces for relaxation. The third floor offers another dining area, a sofa with ocean views and a secluded area perfect for spa offerings like facials and massages.

Tastefully decorated, the house remains cool with excellent fans, while mosquito nets ensure comfortable nights. Outdoors, guests can enjoy a long, deep swimming pool perfect for laps.

The kitchen is run by our chef, whose cooking draws on the Swahili coast's deep food culture: fresh fish, crab, prawns and mussels bought straight off the boats that morning, coconut-based curries, chapatis made by hand and fruit pulled from Lamu's own trees. Meals are built around what's good that day rather than a fixed menu, and the chef is happy to cook for dietary needs or simply to a family's taste. Breakfast on the third floor as the creek wakes up below, long lunches after a morning on the water, and dinners lit by lamplight are all part of the rhythm of a stay here.

Beyond the kitchen, a small dedicated team keeps the house running quietly in the background, housekeeping, security and general upkeep, so that the only thing guests need to think about is how to spend the day.

And there's plenty to fill it. Lamu's old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a short boat ride away and rewards a slow wander through its narrow streets and carved doorways. Sailing is central to life here: traditional dhow trips can be arranged for sunset cruises, fishing or exploring the mangrove channels of the creek.
