NG 19 (Khwai Community) Game Drives

Khwai Community Area
Game Drive Experience
The NG19 Khwai Community Area is one of the most wildlife-rich and rewarding game-drive regions in the Greater Okavango Delta. Bordering Moremi Game Reserve, NG19 benefits from exceptional wildlife movement while allowing for a more flexible safari experience than the national parks.
Game drives take place in open 4x4 safari vehicles, traversing riverine woodland, floodplains, mopane forests, and open grasslands. This diverse habitat supports an impressive concentration of wildlife year-round.
Guests can expect regular sightings of elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, and red lechwe, with predators a major highlight. Lion, leopard, wild dog, and spotted hyena are frequently encountered, particularly during the dry season when animals gather around permanent water sources such as the Khwai River.
A key advantage of game drives in NG19 is the flexibility offered by the community-managed concession. Off-road driving (where conditions allow) and extended sightings are permitted, enabling guides to track predators and spend quality time at wildlife encounters.
Morning and afternoon game drives offer different perspectives:
Early mornings are ideal for predator activity
Late afternoons and evenings deliver golden sunsets and nocturnal sightings
With fewer vehicles, expert local guides, and outstanding wildlife density, game drives in NG19 Khwai remain among the most memorable safari experiences in Botswana.

Night safari

(EXTRA)

Night Drives in NG19
Night drives in the NG19 concession reveal a hidden side of the wilderness that remains unseen during daylight hours. As darkness falls and spotlights sweep across the landscape, attention shifts to the many species that emerge only after sunset.
Over 30% of all wildlife is strictly nocturnal, and night drives offer a rare opportunity to observe these animals at their most active. Sightings may include leopard on the move, porcupine, aardvark, civet, genet and bushbaby, along with a variety of nocturnal birds and insects adapted to life after dark.
With the sounds of the bush amplified under the night sky, these drives provide an exciting and immersive experience, highlighting the richness and diversity of NG19 beyond the daylight hours and adding an essential dimension to any safari.

Birding

(INCLUDED)

Bird Watching in NG19
The NG19 concession is a rewarding destination for bird enthusiasts, offering a rich mosaic of habitats that attract a remarkable diversity of species throughout the year. Open floodplains, seasonal wetlands, riverine corridors and woodland edges combine to create ideal feeding and nesting grounds for both resident and migratory birds.

Water-associated species are especially prolific, along the river systems. The surrounding woodlands support a wide variety of raptors, rollers, bee-eaters and hornbills,.
During the summer months, the arrival of migratory species further enhances the diversity, adding colour, movement and song to an already vibrant birding landscape.
In-Camp Birding Experience
Birding begins the moment you arrive in camp. Ancient leadwood trees provide shaded perches and nesting sites for a variety of woodland birds, while the nearby floodplain and river attract an ever-changing cast of water and riverine species.
The transition zones between woodland and floodplain are particularly productive, offering excellent opportunities to observe birds at close range without leaving camp.

Whether enjoyed quietly over a morning coffee or as a dedicated birding focus during a safari, the combination of leadwood woodland, floodplain and river creates an immersive and highly rewarding bird-watching experience right at camp.

Mokoro Safari

(INCLUDED)

Mokoro Safari – Khwai Region
A mokoro safari in the Khwai region offers one of the most peaceful and immersive ways to experience the Okavango Delta. Gliding silently through narrow channels and open floodplains, guests explore areas inaccessible to vehicles, surrounded by water, reeds, and birdlife.
Traditionally, mokoro safaris were conducted in wooden dug-out canoes, crafted from large trees. Today, these have largely been replaced by fibreglass mokoro, which replicate the classic design while being more eco-friendly, helping to protect the Delta’s fragile ecosystems.
Mokoro safaris usually take place in the early morning, when temperatures are cool, the light is soft, and wildlife is most active along the water’s edge—ideal conditions for photography and tranquillity.
Led by skilled local polers, the journey reveals a slower, more intimate side of the Delta. Expect close encounters with frogs, waterbirds, dragonflies, and aquatic plants, as well as sightings of red lechwe, elephant, buffalo, and hippo at a safe distance.
Unlike game drives, mokoro safaris focus on stillness and observation rather than distance covered. The gentle rhythm of the water, broken by birdsong and the splash of a pole, creates a relaxing contrast to land-based activities and remains a highlight of any Khwai safari.
