Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge

Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge is a ruggedly beautiful retreat tucked high in the Northern Drakensberg, at 2220m above sea level, making it the highest lodge in the region. It’s a place where mountain mist curls around the peaks in the early morning and the Amphitheatre of cliffs glows gold at sunset.

The Lodge is the gateway to the Sentinel Peak Hike, one of South Africa’s most iconic trails, featuring the legendary chain ladders and dramatic views over Tugela Falls, the tallest waterfall in the world by total drop. This makes Witsieshoek a firm favourite among hikers, climbers, trail runners, and photographers.

Accommodation is simple, comfortable, and warm. Choose from mountain view or standard rondavel rooms, premium Sentinel-facing mountain rooms, or the backpacker-style cabin for those on a tighter budget. A hearty buffet breakfast is included, served in the panoramic restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the escarpment. And at the end of the day a massage in the Spa will help ease the ache in those hiking-weary legs.

Onsite activity specialists Thaba Adventures offer guided hikes, quad biking, abseiling and the unforgettable Dragon’s Tale Via Ferrata route—South Africa’s iconic new protected climbing path.

While it feels worlds away from modern life, Witsieshoek is accessible by road and welcomes both self-drivers and guided groups. It’s a proudly community-owned property, managed in partnership with the Batlokoa community of Phuthaditjhaba, and dedicated to preserving both culture and landscape.
