Ecoterra Costa Rica Maleku Indigenous Reserve
The Maleku Indigenous Reserve, in the north of Costa Rica, comprises 2993 hectares and three villages or palenques: Margarita, Tonjibe and El Sol, with a population of 1000 people who speak the Maleku Jaica dialect. This tour aims to teach about the current life of the Maleku and how they have preserved their traditions.
The tour starts at 8:00 a.m. in La Fortuna, with a one hour drive to Palenque Margarita, where the locals will welcome us and explain their lifestyle, past and present. We will visit the traditional ranch to learn about their customs, such as burials, the construction of palenques, their handicrafts, the use of cocoa and the creation of clothing.
We will then walk along a trail in the forest to learn about medicinal plants used by their ancestors. We will also have the opportunity to practice archery, an ancient hunting technique. The tour ends with a dramatization of a traditional Maleku ritual with dances, music and songs, where visitors can participate.
To close the experience, we will enjoy a typical Costa Rican lunch before returning to La Fortuna around 1:00 pm.
