Tintswalo Atlantic
Chefs Warehouse at Tintswalo Atlantic
Prepare to pinch yourself, multiple times…for in this seaside restaurant, you’ll be doing that a lot. A piece of boulder-hugging heaven that rests a stone’s throw above the rugged coastline near Chapman’s Peak on the Cape Peninsula’s Atlantic side, and a chauffeured drive down a cliffside to get you there. This is a natural spoil for the senses… with a dining experience to match.
Here, there’s an easy-going but luxurious synergy between boutique hotel Tintswalo Atlantic, which feels like the beach house of your dreams, and Liam Tomlin’s Chefs Warehouse concept.
With the peace and energy of the sea and mountains comes a strong sense of place; a chef’s dream to interpret and play with. Cameron Smith and the kitchen brigade are cooking food that reflects the fresh diverse natural products of the Cape, with great care in sourcing ingredients, from local growers of unusual and heirloom herbs and vegetables to ethical fishmongers with sustainably caught fish fresh out of the water, to coastal plants with unique flavors foraged on the property.
The five-course menu of small plates to be shared emphasizes not only seafood but sea life. The menu changes regularly and is anything but your basic fish and tartare sauce fare: a line fish sashimi with smoked haddock crème fraiche, togarashi squid with charred jalapeno mayonnaise, pan-fried kingklip with smoked snoek beurre blanc to name just a few.
Seafood is central but not exclusive: the menu is peppered with meat, game, and vegetable dishes that also reflect this special Cape location – with plant-based options as well. Of course, like all of Liam’s Chefs Warehouse restaurants, there are his personal favourites. Fresh oysters and risotto, done anything but conventionally. And a wine list as lively and diverse as the food.
In the end, like Liam’s other restaurants, Tintswalo is not about making sweeping culinary statements or presenting a smorgasbord of odd ingredients on a plate. It’s about making sense and doing honour to the setting and its produce, in the most beautiful and delicious way possible.
Cheers to sound thinking, food artistry, and the luxury of perfectly simple surroundings. This is truly the good life.
