Tanzanian National Parks do not normally authorize this type of activity within the park limits. We are lucky enough to have a special permit to conduct walking safaris inside Tarangire National Park. Itinerary : Tembo Njia (meaning, elephant’s path in Swahili) is a 6 km trail. The trekking starts at Maweninga Camp and a vehicle awaits guests at the end of the tour and drives them back to camp. There aren’t any technical difficulties and this is open to everyone over the age of 16. To make the most of your walk, we suggest an early morning start (you may start as early as 7 from camp and then have breakfast when you return) or a mid-late afternoon start in order to avoid the day’s heat. A TANAPA guide or your driver guide plus an armed ranger will show you the way through varied landscapes. Lots of different animals can be observed: gazelles (including Cape Elands), zebras, elephants, wildebeests, buffalos… Clothes / Equipment : ideally a pair of trousers, closed shoes, long sleeved tee-shirt or shirt as well as a hat. Camera & binoculars Duration of the walk: 2 to 3 hours, depending on your pace (and encounters!!)

This unique experience is normally not possible within National Park boundaries but we are happy to announce that we now have a special permit from TANAPA to conduct this. According to park rules, safari vehicles must be back to camps by dusk, at about 6 PM, but some animal behaviors can only be observed once animals get moving in the dark. Hence, the high interest for this type of activity. Programme : Have an early meal at camp and then depart from Maweninga camp in your 4 x 4. On top of our regular driver-guide, another guide sits in the front with a spot-light in his hands, searching the bush for interesting sights. Hippos can then be seen walking out of their ponds looking for fresh grass, predators getting ready for their night hunts or purely nocturnal animals such as pourcupines... Night game drives are shorter than day safaris and usually last about 1h30 / 2h00.
