Where the palm-dotted plains of the exclusive-use Burunge Wildlife Management Area meet the shores of Lake Manyara, Chem Chem Lodge unfolds in the dappled shade of acacias and fever trees. Here, amid a landscape that rewards presence over pace, the Slow Safari philosophy first took shape.

The philosophy threads through the lodge — a spaced-apart layout that offers ample room to breathe, architecture that grounds itself in nature through details of hand-carved wood, stone, and thatch, and an atmosphere untouched by rush. There are no set schedules at the lodge, and every moment is shaped around you, from the rhythm of the day to the choice of activity. Here, connecting with the wild is the point.

Accommodation
The lodge's seven tented suites and family unit are designed for seclusion — each one set well apart from the next, with nature your only neighbor. Step inside and the wilderness follows: stone meeting canvas and sisal, wooden furnishings hand-carved on site, and the sounds of the bush filtering through. The details center restoration — king beds dressed in bespoke linen and reading nooks made for slow afternoons. En suite bathrooms have twin vanities, an indoor shower, and a lantern-lit outdoor shower.

The family unit follows the same design. It has two bedrooms, each with an en suite bathroom, and sleeps up to two adults and three children. A single bed is available for children up to 15. Children aged four and older are welcome.

Chem Chem Lodge offers day and evening game drives, scenic sundowners, helicopter excursions, big tusker encounters, nature walks, silent walks, power walks, running with the Maasai, Maasai village experiences and visits to a Barabaig boma.

You can also arrange the following in advance, at an additional cost: a full- or half-day trip to Tarangire National Park, known for its baobabs and elephant herds; a private Wild Dining experience; a Maasai blessing ceremony or choir to mark a special occasion; a hot air balloon safari; and helicopter excursions.
