Shumba Camp

Set deep within the vast seasonal floodplains of Busanga Plains in the northern reaches of Kafue National Park, Shumba Camp is one of Zambia’s most refined and remote safari camps. The camp sits on a wooded island surrounded by endless grasslands and wetlands that flood during part of the year, creating a dramatic landscape of mirror-like channels, misty dawns and huge concentrations of wildlife. The name “Shumba” means lion, an apt reference to the famous prides that roam the plains, guests consistently describe the setting as cinematic, peaceful and extraordinarily wild. Guests frequently mention the sense of exclusivity and game drives often feel as though they are taking place in a private reserve rather than a national park.

The camp itself has a contemporary safari aesthetic that balances luxury with a strong sense of place. Raised wooden walkways connect the main lounge, dining spaces and guest tents, all elevated above the floodplain to maximise views and accommodate seasonal waters. The design is modern but warm, with canvas, timber, soft neutral fabrics and open-fronted decks that frame the sweeping plains. It feels elegant without becoming overly formal or polished, and most folks highlight how naturally the camp blends into the landscape. The central area includes shaded decks beneath giant fig trees, a stylish bar and lounge, an open-air boma for dinners around the fire, and a swimming pool overlooking the floodplain where antelope and occasionally predators can be seen moving through camp.

Accommodation at Shumba Camp consists of just six spacious luxury safari tents, which contributes greatly to the intimate atmosphere. The rooms are large and airy, with polished wooden floors, king or twin beds draped in crisp linens, lounge seating and expansive verandas facing the plains. Indoor and outdoor showers are standard, and the bathrooms are generously proportioned with modern fittings and a slightly minimalist style that still feels authentically safari-oriented rather than hotel-like.

The swimming pool and elevated viewing decks are particularly popular during the middle of the day when wildlife gathers around nearby floodplains. Dining is a major part of the experience and receives frequent praise in guest commentary, especially the interactive style where some meals are prepared over open fires in front of guests. Dinners in the boma under the stars are memorable, with warm Zambian hospitality and a convivial atmosphere. Service is attentive yet relaxed, with guides and camp staff creating a highly personal experience because of the small number of guests.

Activities at Shumba Camp centre on exploring the Busanga ecosystem, one of Africa’s great predator habitats. Day and night game drives are the primary focus, and the plains are particularly renowned for lion, cheetah and wild dog sightings, alongside huge herds of red lechwe, buffalo and zebra. The openness of the terrain allows for exceptional wildlife viewing and photography, something repeatedly reflected in guest reviews. Walking safaris are also offered when conditions permit, providing a slower, more intimate understanding of the landscape and smaller species.  Birding is outstanding too, especially during the wetter months when the plains attract large numbers of migratory species. Guests frequently comment that the guiding quality is among the camp’s greatest strengths, with guides praised for both tracking skills and depth of ecological knowledge.

Access to Shumba Camp is part of its remote appeal. Most guests arrive by light aircraft from Lusaka or Livingstone to Busanga Airstrip, followed by a game drive transfer to camp through the plains. Flights typically take around 90 minutes from Lusaka and closer to two hours from Livingstone. During the dry season, the Busanga Plains become increasingly accessible as floodwaters recede, and the camp generally operates from May through October or early January depending on rainfall patterns.
