Pakamisa Private Lodge

Horseback Safaris
A horse safari is a unique experience for those who would combine the pleasure of riding with a love for the wild and the thrill of an African safari. An adventure which allows you to experience African wildlife, scenery and culture at close quarters. Horse and rider become one with the environment – sharing the same sights, scents, sounds and excitement of the African wilderness.
At Pakamisa we specialise in pleasure riding holidays for families, groups and individuals.
Combining the magnificent scenery with the thrill of riding amongst teeming herds of game is something no horse lover coming to South Africa should miss.
Each of our trail rides provide incredible game viewing on horseback, while meandering through the plains and challenging climbs of the hills of Pakamisa Reserve. You may ride into a herd of impala, wildebeest and numerous warthogs will let you get close to them before they start trotting off.
One of our professional guides will guide you through Pakamisa’s unspoilt wilderness areas, introduce you to the African fauna & flora and share with you the excitement of a Horseback safari.
Riding schedules are tailored to the requirements of each group, starting from a beginner lesson of half an hour, to a daily ride of up to five hours, with a break for a romantic Bush breakfast or picnic.
Great emphasis is placed on the care of our horses, which are Pure Arabians and Cross-breeds with the indigenous South African “Boerperd”.
Tack is kept in excellent condition and we use English and endurance saddles.
Every effort is made to match the guest to ‘his/her’ perfect horse.
For safety reasons the groups are limited to seven riders. Children are allowed on horse safaris from 10 years on, unless prior arrangement. A weight limit of 85 kgs per rider is set.
After a day of riding, guests return to Pakamisa lodge enjoying comfortable accommodation, relax around the pool, sip some drinks on the immense veranda, or read a book on the private terrace of their luxury suite.
For those visitors who would like to experience Pakamisa on two legs rather than four, there are numerous walks and trails through the valleys, along the river banks, or climb up the Pakamisa mountain for the most rewarding panoramic view of 360 degrees.
Weather: Summer months are September to April. January and February are the hottest months, with temperature varying between 15 degrees C and 30 degrees. The rainy season starts in October and is usually limited to short thunder storms. Winter is May to the end of August and no rains are expected. Evening and early mornings are cool, with temperatures between 10 degrees C and 25 degrees C. These are the best months for riding as we can ride all day long.
