Blue Pass Arenal Trekking - 1968 Trail Park
More than just a hike, this is an adventure into the heart of Arenal's dramatic past!
Hike Back in Time!
Join us on a journey through geological history on this moderately challenging trek through Arenal 1968 Park. Our hike explores the dramatic landscape sculpted by the mighty Arenal Volcano, offering stunning views and fascinating insights into this iconic Costa Rican landmark.
This park preserves the fiery past of Arenal, a towering stratovolcano reaching 1,657 meters (5,437 ft), which has been actively erupting for over 7,000 years! For centuries, Arenal was considered dormant, and since these lands were very recently colonized, only the Maleku aborigines knew what was hidden inside.
The 1968 eruption was particularly significant, spewing molten rock and ash for months, and then continuing to do so for the next forty years. Our hike traverses the very lava flows that solidified from this event, creating a barren yet strangely beautiful moonscape.
Even so, nature always finds a way. Surprisingly, flanking a beautiful lagoon, is the only patch of primary forest that survived the eruptions of those early years, creating a green landscape embedded in the middle of the lava flows.
However, Arenal 1968 Park isn't just about volcanic history. Witness firsthand the power of nature's reclamation. Although young, secondary rainforest is slowly but surely taking hold, transforming the lava flows into a verdant habitat. Keep an eye out for vegetation reclaiming the land, with tenacious trees and ferns pushing through the terrain, and exotic flora and fauna, including vibrant orchids clinging to the volcanic rock.
The hike leads us to a vantage point offering breathtaking panoramas of the Arenal Volcano, majestic in its presence. On a clear day, you might even catch a glimpse of the turquoise Arenal Lake sparkling in the distance. The Lava Flow Trail takes us directly across the lava fields. Imagine the immense power required to create such a vast and rugged landscape. Look for remnants of the once-fertile land, now preserved amidst the cooled lava.
This trek promises a unique blend of adventure, education, and breathtaking natural beauty. Lace up your boots and join us on a journey to discover the captivating legacy of the Arenal Volcano!
