Saruni Samburu

Built into the boulders of a towering volcanic rock face, Saruni Samburu’s six villas are open, spacious and positioned to make the most of one of Kenya’s most arresting landscapes. The Northern Frontier District unfolds in every direction, with the snow-capped peak of Mount Kenya a distant, quietly humbling presence on the horizon.

This is elephant country. Vast herds move freely through the conservancy, and in Samburu National Reserve the Ewaso Nyiro River threads through the arid landscape, a lifeline that draws predators and rare species to its banks. This is home to the Samburu Special Five: Grévy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich and gerenuk. Below the lodge, a sunken hide beside the waterhole puts you at eye level with elephant, leopard and hyena as they come to drink.

From the moment you arrive, you are in the hands of Samburu warriors who know this land the way most of us know our own homes. Their guidance is an invitation into a living culture, an ancient body of knowledge and a way of seeing the wilderness that no guidebook can replicate. It is shared on game drives by day and night, on bush walks, in visits to caves of ancient Samburu rock art, and around the fire after dark.

Between adventures, two rock-hewn infinity pools look out over the plains, and the Samburu Wellbeing Space offers treatments drawn from traditional Samburu healing.

The north has a way of getting under your skin: the scale of it, the stillness, the warmth of the people who call it home. Guests leave Saruni Samburu quietly changed, and quietly planning their return.
