LIGHT AIRCRAFT TRANSFERS

Generally the aircraft that operate  in Botswana

  • Cessna Caravan 208s – carrying 10 to 13 guests, depending on the routing and airstrips utilized – with 20 kg (44 lb) luggage.
  • Cessna 206s and 210s – carrying 4 guests with 20 kg (44 lb) luggage.

The strict weight restrictions in place on any itinerary which includes light aircraft transfers are for the following

reasons:

  • The aircraft are designed with a maximum bodyweight and luggage weight allowance.
  • Most of our airfields are at a fairly high elevation and located in the warm to hot tropics. Therefore the permissible aircraft carrying capacity is reduced.
  • The aircraft have physical space restrictions. Please refer to the images below for an indication on the cargo hold compartment limitations.

These important luggage and weight guidelines below must please be noted for all air transfers:

  • Luggage, including camera equipment and hand luggage, is restricted to 20 kg (44 lb) per person travelling on seat rates, in Botswana.
  • Only soft bags will be accepted – no protruding  wheels, frames or rigid structures can be transported as flexibility of the bag is  limited and restricts physical loading into the aircraft.   If the bag has an under carriage frame with wheels and a handle that folds back down into the frame, this is fine.

Whilst these weight and size allowances appear minimal, please bear in mind the following:

  • Most safari camps/lodges and hotels provide basic toilet amenities.
  • Laundry can be done on a daily basis (many camps provide this service free of charge, however, some camps and hotels do charge a nominal fee).
  • More formal attire is usually required only when staying in the more prestigious city hotel establishments or on any of the luxury trains. On a wildlife safari, casual clothing is the order of the day. Please refer to our suggested packing list as a guideline.

 Passengers travelling on light aircraft:

  • We need to be informed in advance if guests weigh more than 100 kg (220 lb), as additional weight allowance on the  aircraft must be purchased for safety and comfort. The cost for this is calculated on request according to specific region  and routing.
  • Each and every aircraft has a legal take-off and landing weight. This includes fuel, luggage and per seat passenger weight. We are unable to combine passenger weights as this may affect the weight and balance of an aircraft due to  unknown variables of the group of passengers on the day. Any deviations from these weight regulations could affect the  take-off and landing capabilities of the aircraft.

Safari Tips for clothing and packing

  1. Binoculars are probably one of the most important things to bring to Africa. They will enhance your viewing experience tenfold. Try and get at least 8 x 30 magnification.
  2. Malaria tablets- if you are going to a malaria area. It is important to consult your doctor for the best prophylactic for the area you are visiting.
  3. Good quality sunglasses - tinted fashion glasses are not good in strong light
  4. Sun hat & Sun block lotion at a minimum factor 30
  5. Insect repellent e.g. Tabard, Rid, Jungle Juice, etc
  6. Basic medical kit (aspirins, Band-Aids, Imodium, antiseptic cream and Anti-histamine cream etc)
  7. Golf-shirts, T-shirts and long-sleeved cotton shirts
  8. Shorts/skirts
  9. Long trousers/pants
  10. A sports bra can be a comfortable option on some of the bumpy game drive roads.
  11. Good walking shoes (running/tennis shoes are fine). If you are going on a walking safari, make sure you take shoes that are comfortable and already walked in.
  12. Sandals
  13. Warm sweater/fleece – beanie, scarf, gloves and thermal socks/underwear for winter
  14. If you are using a telephoto camera, try and make sure you have at least a 200mm lens, but if you can go bigger, up to 400mm, then go for it as you will not be disappointed. Size does count on safari!!!
  15. Recharger to charge your camera battery.
  16. Make sure you have enough memory cards for your camera. There are a lot of large cards on the market but a suggestion is that you get a few smaller ones, to make up the same amount of memory. This is in case you have a problem with a card in the camera. For example instead of a 16G card you get 2 x 8G. This way you can still keep taking pictures and sort out the problem card back home.
  17. Waterproof/dustproof bags/cover for your cameras.
  18. If  you wear contact lenses, we recommend that you bring along a pair of glasses in case you get irritation from the dust
  19. Personal toiletries (basic amenities supplied by most establishments)
  20. Please note that bright colours and white are NOT advised whilst on safari. Please remember that there may be a restriction on luggage limits on your safari
