The second chapter shifts the setting from the open Makgadikgadi landscape to the waterways of the Okavango, while retaining the conservation, coexistence and community focus that defines Motswako.

Days 1 to 4: Moela Safari Lodge – Makgadikgadi Conservation & Coexistence

Begin with three nights at Moela Safari Lodge, introducing guests to the open landscapes and wilderness character of the Makgadikgadi region.

The experience combines safari with cultural interpretation and conservation-focused activities, creating the first chapter of the Motswako story.

Guests have opportunities to experience the surrounding wilderness through guided activities while gaining a deeper understanding of the relationship between local communities and wildlife.

Community Elephant Coexistence Experience

Visit the Elephants for Africa (EFA) project on the north-western edge of Makgadikgadi Pans National Park to learn about human-elephant coexistence.

Guests engage with the realities of communities living alongside elephants, including practical approaches to reducing human-wildlife conflict.

The experience provides an opportunity to speak with local farmers , gaining insight into daily challenges and community-led solutions, followed by a visit to the EFA research base to observe field activities.

Hope for Hippos: Feeding and Relief Initiative

Moela Safari Lodge supports Kokovango’s vital Hope for Hippos initiative, created to assist a group of 44 hippos through harsh drought conditions. By providing a consistent supply of supplementary food and fresh water, the initiative helps ensure that these animals have the resources needed to endure periods of environmental stress.

The project responds to immediate welfare needs while supporting the longer-term wellbeing of the hippo population and the delicate ecosystem they inhabit. It gives guests an additional opportunity to understand the practical, on-the-ground conservation work taking place in the Boteti River Valley and wider Makgadikgadi region.

Makgadikgadi Wildlife Experience

Game drives into the Makgadikgadi region provide opportunities to search for elephants, predators and desert-adapted wildlife.

Depending on conditions and the season, guests may also experience the region's zebra and wildebeest migration.

Bushman Walking Experience

A guided Bushman walking experience introduces guests to traditional knowledge of plants, tracking and survival in the Kalahari landscape.

After the Moela stay, guests return by road to Maun.

From Maun, the journey continues by helicopter to Chacha Metsi, creating a dramatic transition from the Makgadikgadi landscape into the Okavango Delta.

Days 4 to 7: Chacha Metsi – Okavango Conservation & Cultural Finale

Following the Makgadikgadi chapter, the journey continues to Chacha Metsi in the Okavango Delta.

The landscape changes from open dry-country environments to the waterways, islands, wetlands and permanent channels of the Delta, but the central Motswako theme remains unchanged.

Here, conservation, culture and community experiences continue to form an important part of the journey, complemented by the primary Delta safari activities offered from Chacha Metsi.

Okavango Wilderness Experiences
