The Republic of Congo or otherwise known as Congo Brazzaville is one of the last refuges of the critically endangered Western Lowland Gorilla. These great apes can be tracked in their natural habitat in Odzala-Kokoua National Park, which is located in the north-west of the country. An ‘Odzala Experience’ is truly unique as it encompasses the exploration of a remote, thriving and unspoiled rainforest ecosystem. Including nocturnal forest walks, wading through forest streams, kayaking along the river while viewing wildlife such as Forest elephant, buffalo, Giant hog, Bongo and for bird lovers it is a wonderful opportunity to witness a colony of African Grey Parrots and Green Pigeons along with many more species.
Now connecting this amazing experience with the very remote and difficult to access - Dzanga Bai in Central African Republic, also referred to as CAR. The mineral rich Dzanga Bai is a refuge for forest elephants who gather in herds up to 4,000 in number, a truly humbling ritual to witness. Keep your eyes open for some of the other normally shy forest creatures that are also drawn to this Bai. Wildlife viewing at night offers you the chance to find the elusive pangolin.
Spending time at the research station for Western Lowland gorillas in Bai Hoku is an enriching experience, where there is also a Pangolin rehabilitation project, where you can see habituated Black-bellied pangolin that have been returned to the wild, and are monitored daily by members of the Ba’ka tribe. Enjoy a morning with the Ba’aka tribe on their daily hunter-gatherer activities while being taught about the medicinal uses of plants, for an intense and authentic cultural exchange.
This experience will truly take your breath away!
PLEASE NOTE:
This itinerary has set departure days and therefore can only be arranged with departure dates to Mboko Airstrip on Thursdays. This is due to the fact that there is only one charter flight a week to and from Odzala National Park.
Please keep this in mind while planning your travel dates; ideally we recommend that you arrive in Brazzaville the night before and stay the night at Radisson Blu (This would be on a Wednesday).
