Colombia is one of the most biodiverse countries on earth, and this small group escorted journey has been designed to explore three very different wild regions: the Amazonian transition zone, the high Eastern Andes, and the Pacific coast.
We begin in the Colombian Amazon, where the Serranía La Lindosa lies at a natural boundary between the Orinoquía grasslands and Amazonia. Here, the Río Guaviare flows beneath ancient sandstone escarpments, creating a rich mix of river, forest and open landscapes. Amazon River Dolphins are regularly seen in the river, while woolly and howler monkeys move through the surrounding forest. Birdlife is excellent too, with species from both ecosystems represented.
The rock faces of Cerro Azul hold paintings dating back more than 12,000 years, depicting animals that still live in the surrounding landscape today. Seeing these alongside the wildlife and habitats of the present day gives the area a real sense of continuity.
From here, we return to the Eastern Andes above Bogotá and visit Chingaza National Natural Park. This is páramo country — a high-altitude ecosystem unique to the northern Andes, shaped by frailejón plants, glacial lakes and cloud forest. It is also one of the best areas in Colombia to look for Spectacled Bear, as they move between the forest and open moorland. Birdlife is exceptional, including the endemic Green-bearded Helmetcrest, a species found only in this specialised habitat.
We then continue to Colombia’s Pacific coast, part of the Chocó region, one of the wettest and most species-rich regions on earth. Based in Bahía Solano, we explore the surrounding rainforest, including El Almejal Reserve, an important area for biodiversity and sea turtle conservation.
Offshore, the focus shifts to the annual arrival of Humpback Whales. Between July and October, whales migrate here from Antarctica to calve in the sheltered bays. Travelling in September places us in the middle of the season, with a good chance of seeing mothers with young calves, along with more active behaviour from competing males.
This is a wildlife journey through three distinct Colombian frontiers, linking Amazonian transition zones, high Andean landscapes and the Pacific coast. It brings together remarkable wildlife, varied habitats and a strong natural history focus throughout.
