Colombia: Three Frontiers. Starting in Bogota on the 17th September 2027
Starting in the Colombian Amazon: The Serranía La Lindosa lies at a natural boundary where the Orinoquía grasslands meet Amazonia, marked by the Río Guaviare flowing beneath an ancient sandstone escarpment. This transition zone supports a wide mix of wildlife. Amazon River Dolphin are regularly seen in the river, while woolly and howler monkeys occupy the forests. Birdlife reflects both ecosystems, with over 700 species recorded in the region.
The rock faces of Cerro Azul hold paintings dating back over 12,000 years, depicting animals that still live here today. Seeing these alongside the living landscape gives a strong sense of continuity.
The Eastern Andes above Bogotá are among the most biodiverse mountain systems on earth, and Chingaza National Natural Park sits at their centre. This is páramo country — a high-altitude ecosystem unique to the northern Andes, shaped by frailejón plants and glacial lakes. It is also one of the best places to look for the Spectacled Bear, moving between cloud forest and open moorland. Birdlife is exceptional, with over 500 species recorded, including the endemic Green-bearded Helmetcrest, found only in this habitat.
We then continue to Colombia’s Pacific coast, part of the Chocó region — one of the wettest and most species-rich regions on earth. Based in Bahía Solano, we explore the surrounding rainforest, including El Almejal Reserve, an important area for both biodiversity and sea turtle conservation.
Offshore, the focus shifts to the annual arrival of the Humpback Whale. Between July and October, whales migrate here from Antarctica to calve in the sheltered bays. Travelling in September places us in the middle of this season, with a good chance of seeing mothers with young calves, as well as more active behaviour from competing males.
This is a journey through diverse biomes, linking high Andean landscapes, Amazonian transition zones and the Pacific coast, with a strong focus on wildlife and natural history throughout.
If the idea of exploring Colombia through its wild places, remarkable fauna and flora and varied landscapes appeals, get in touch and we would be very happy to tell you more.
