Introduction

Zambia’s Only Horseback Safari – Ride Through the Wild Beauty of Similaha

Busanga Safaris is proud to introduce an extraordinary new adventure which is run with great skill and expertise by the Evans Family —Zambia’s only dedicated horseback safari, set in the vast and little-known Similaha Community Conservancy. This remote stretch of untouched Zambezi floodplains offers a rare opportunity to ride across open wilderness, free from predators, where wildlife thrives and village life remains unchanged by time.

Pure Riding Freedom

Traverse sweeping grasslands, cross shimmering lagoons, and move effortlessly among plains game, all while immersed in the raw beauty of an unspoiled landscape. With no vehicle tracks or fences, the only sounds are the rhythmic beat of hooves and the calls of Africa’s wild inhabitants.

Your journey begins with a breathtaking boat trip on the mighty Zambezi River, where elephants wade, hippos jostle, and birdlife flourishes—an unforgettable introduction to the wilderness ahead.

Your host and guide, Doug Evans, is a lifelong horseman and conservationist with over Y40 years of experience exploring and protecting Zambia’s wild places. Raised in the saddle, prioritizing a calm, respectful approach that fosters deep trust with his herd.

Doug’s vision of leading multi-day horseback safaris in remote wilderness has come to life in the Simalaha Wildlife Conservancy, where he shares the story of the land, its people, and its role in sustainable conservation.

This is a family-run operation, with Doug’s son, Murray Evans, ensuring the health and comfort of the horses as a Master Farrier. Together with their dedicated team, the Evans family invites you to experience the harmony between people, wildlife, and the land—all from the unique perspective of the saddle.

Exclusive and Tailored for All Riders

To fully enjoy this experience, you must be fit, confident, and competent in the saddle. This safari suits intermediate-plus to advanced riders who ride regularly and can comfortably handle a responsive, energetic horse at all paces, including galloping in open terrain. Your confidence and control ensure both your safety and the horses’ well-being.

This safari can also be booked on an exclusive-use basis, allowing us to tailor the experience to your group’s comfort and skill levels. Whether you're a seasoned rider or a beginner, to ensure a safe and memorable journey that caters to mixed abilities, so everyone can enjoy the adventure at their own pace.

More Than Just a Ride

This safari offers a rare insight into rural Zambia, where tradition and nature exist in harmony. Beyond the saddle, you’ll witness a way of life unchanged for generations, deepening your connection to this remarkable landscape.

Extend Your Journey – From the Saddle to Zambia’s Wildest Places

This horseback safari can be the focus of your trip or seamlessly combined with a wildlife safari in Zambia’s top national parks. Whether it’s the predator-rich Luangwa Valley, the vast wilderness of Kafue, the remote floodplains of Liuwa, or the riverine beauty of Lower Zambezi, we’ll craft the perfect itinerary to suit your adventure.

After your 3-night horseback experience, you can extend your stay at Chundukwa River Lodge in Livingstone—unwinding along the Zambezi and exploring the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls.

Anything is possible—just ask, and we’ll create a journey tailored to you.
