Overview

Botswana Through the Lens is a 12-night birding and photographic safari designed around four distinctly different Botswana environments: the elephant-rich Chobe River, the permanent-water wilderness of Setari, the active land-and-water Delta experience of Cha Cha Metsi, and the expansive Boteti River Valley at Moela Safari Lodge.

Rather than simply connecting four safari camps, the itinerary creates a deliberate photographic progression. Guests begin with big-river wildlife, elephants and boat-based photography in Chobe; move into the deeper waterways, islands, birdlife and reflections of the Okavango at Setari; return to a more active wildlife and mixed-habitat experience at Cha Cha Metsi; and conclude with the broad horizons, riverine wildlife and seasonal migration landscapes of the Boteti at Moela.

The journey is particularly suited to photographers and birders who value variety of subject, habitat, perspective and light, while retaining the comfort, flexibility and relaxed pace of a premium Botswana safari. Chobe Bakwena offers in-house game drives and boat cruises, Setari is a year-round water-based camp with boating and mokoro, and Cha Cha Metsi combines game drives, walking, mokoro and optional horseback safaris for experienced riders.

Different seasons bring different photographic strengths. Dry-season travel can bring concentrated wildlife around permanent water and clearer viewing conditions, while green-season departures offer migratory birds, lush landscapes, newborn wildlife, dramatic skies and softer, more atmospheric light.

Detailed Itinerary

Days 1–4: Chobe Bakwena

Big-River Wildlife

The photographic journey begins in the Chobe region after arrival at Kasane Airport, followed by a road transfer to Chobe Bakwena.

The Chobe River provides immediate visual impact, with permanent water, expansive river landscapes and strong opportunities for wildlife and bird photography. Chobe Bakwena offers both game drives into Chobe National Park and in-house boat cruises on the river, giving guests contrasting photographic opportunities on land and water.

This opening chapter is particularly suited to elephant photography, with opportunities to capture elephants approaching the river, drinking, feeding, crossing channels and interacting along the riverbanks. Boat activities add a water-level perspective for hippos, crocodiles, buffalo, waterbirds and river scenery, while morning drives and afternoon cruises allow photographers to work with changing light throughout the day.

Dry-season conditions can concentrate wildlife around the river, while greener months bring lush vegetation, increased bird activity, newborn wildlife and dramatic cloud formations.

Days 4–7: Setari Camp

Water Wilderness

Guests continue from Chobe by light aircraft to Jedibe Airstrip, followed by a boat transfer to Setari Camp.

The landscape changes dramatically—from the broad Chobe River to the permanent waterways, channels, reedbeds and islands of the northern Okavango. Setari is the specialist water-photography chapter of the safari, with year-round water activities centred on boating, mokoro and walking.

Guests explore by motorboat and mokoro, with opportunities for island walks, fishing, birding, sundowner outings and extended water exploration where conditions permit. Setari’s fleet includes specially adapted boats, two with upper decks for elevated Delta viewing, alongside traditional mokoro excursions for quieter, closer perspectives.

The emphasis shifts towards intimate photographic subjects:

Days 7–10: Cha Cha Metsi

Active Delta

After breakfast, guests depart Setari by private helicopter via Maun to Cha Cha Metsi.

The aerial journey provides a spectacular photographic transition, revealing channels, floodplains, islands and woodland from above. On arrival, the experience shifts from Setari’s specialist permanent-water environment into a more active and mixed-habitat Delta safari.

Cha Cha Metsi combines game drives, mokoro excursions, guided walks, birding, sundowners, relaxed camp time and optional horseback safari for suitably experienced riders. The camp’s activities include game drives around Lion Island, mokoro exploration of the Santantadibe River and walks with an experienced guide; horse riding is available at an additional cost for experienced riders.

The varied habitats create opportunities for elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, hippos, antelope, plains game, varied birdlife and potential predator sightings, subject to season and wildlife movements.

For suitable riders, horseback safari adds a distinctive photographic dimension, particularly for equestrian, landscape and environmental storytelling.

Days 10–13: Moela Safari Lodge

Boteti Horizons

Guests depart Cha Cha Metsi by private helicopter to Maun, followed by a road transfer to Moela Safari Lodge.

The final chapter moves away from the waterways and islands of the Okavango into the open landscapes of the Boteti River Valley. This creates a powerful photographic contrast and a purposeful finale after the river and Delta portions of the journey.
