Windmill in the Reeds - Pre Departure Information

We are delighted to be leading this wonderful painting holiday in the UK. Norfolk is a beautiful area nestled away along the coast of East Anglia, known for its rolling beaches, mighty sand dunes, quaint coastal towns, and endless wildlife, marshlands and of course, adorable seals! Cley Windmill is simply amazing, a hotel full of quirks, character and personality. Each room is unique in its own right, with no two rooms being the same! We encourage you to explore all areas of the Mill, making sure to mind your head on the beams! 

You will be under the wonderful expertise of Julia Cassels, who will tutor you on this magnificent trip, her first artist led Safari in Norfolk, with a friendly smile and a fun energy that will lead you to fill your sketchbooks with movement and colour. She moved to Kenya to work with the Masai in the heart of the Rift Valley in her early 20’s. There she found the wondrous rhythms, shapes, and colours captivating, sparking a love for Africa and its wildlife that is forever present in her work.

 Although specialising in watercolour, Julia will often introduce inks, graphite or charcoal to gain a natural fluidity. More recently she has started using acrylics which successfully add a greater substance to her easy impressionistic approach. Her work reflects a true intimate understanding of her subjects, as her distinctive style captures their very essence with remarkable spontaneity. Having spent many years living and working in Zambia then Tanzania, she returned to England. Julia now paints from her studio in Hampshire. She exhibits widely, with her work being regularly short-listed for the David Shepherd Wildlife of the Year Exhibition, as well as being found in many collections worldwide.
