Brazil’s Pantanal: Jaguar and Wildlife Journey
Starting in São Paulo on 4th September 2027
The Pantanal is the largest wetland on the planet, covering around 150,000 square kilometres of waterways, grasslands, savannahs and seasonal floodplains. It is also one of the finest wildlife regions in the world, with an extraordinary concentration of mammals, reptiles and birds.
This journey is timed for the dry season, when wildlife is drawn to the permanent water. For jaguars, this is a key time of year, as they patrol riverbanks and channels in search of prey such as caiman and capybara. Around 5,000 jaguars live in the Pantanal, and sightings from boats can range from a brief glimpse to long, relaxed encounters lasting several hours.
While the jaguar is our main focus, this journey is about far more than one species. The Pantanal is home to a recorded 656 bird species, 236 mammals and 80 reptiles. Our wish list includes giant otter, capybara, hyacinth macaw, anaconda, South American tapir and, with luck, giant anteater.
The itinerary has been designed to explore the Pantanal properly, combining key lodges and locations with time based on the water. Highlights include a lodge on the Paraguay River with boat exploration in the 11,500-hectare Taiamã Reserve, walking and jeep safaris on a traditional cattle ranch, and four nights in a floating hotel in the heart of jaguar territory.
From our floating base, we will head out by boat twice daily, exploring the river channels and banks in search of jaguars, giant otters and the many birds, mammals and reptiles that make this region so special.
