Summary:
This safari starts and ends in Maun in Botswana. This is an unforgettable Delta experience, taking you to two exclusive areas of the Okavango Delta. Spend five days at two of our chosen premier Okavango Delta camps.
Wilderness Vumbura Plains may well be the best camp we can think of. Split into North and South camps, Wilderness Vumbura Plains is exceptional, and is operated and managed by both the local community and Wilderness. The camps are beautiful and everything you could hope for in a Wilderness property. It is one of the few places in the Delta to offer wet and dry game viewing throughout the year.
Mombo: One of Africa’s most famous camps and the location of the very best game viewing in Botswana. Unbelievably good for game all year. Best combined with a camp that offers the water activities the Delta is most famous for.
Highlights of this safari:
- Vumbura: Finest multi-purpose concession in the Okavango Delta for wildlife, and year-round land and water activities.
- Vumbura: Annually inundated grasslands offer a photographic paradise, showcasing phenomenal predator and prey action.
- Vumbura: Dreamy Delta waterways, riverine and island woodlands and vast floodplains invite adventure: day and night game drives, nature walks, and boating.
- Mombo:,Arguably the best year-round game-viewing destination in Botswana, with exceptional predator-prey sightings.
- Mombo: The annual inundation forms a natural barrier that confines the animals to Mombo’s private wilderness area, while the remarkable concentration of big cats during summer, when the prey species have their young, means that Mombo is rightly known as the ‘Place of Plenty’ for its all-year wildlife abundance.
- Mombo: Award-winning responsible-luxury safari camp in the heart of the magnificent Delta.
Safari Itinerary
Days: 1-4
OKAVANGO DELTA
On arrival at the Maun airport, guests will be met by a representative who will assist them with boarding light aircraft transfer to Vumbura.
Destination: The Vumbura Plains Private Wilderness Area is found in the northern-eastern Okavango Delta adjoining the Moremi Game Reserve. Its prime position in the dry savannah interior, set on one of the main channels that feeds the Delta, means year-round adventures on land and water. Contemporary and luxurious, the camp is as lavish and lush as its beautiful surroundings, which are home to an abundant and diverse array of wildlife, including large – and small – predators. The 60,000-hectare (148,263-acre) private concession is leased from five villages through the Okavango Community Trust (OCT), a partnership that spans many successful years of impactful conservation tourism in the area.
Experience: The camp offers exceptional opportunities for families and friends to reconnect and enjoy shared adventures in one of the world’s most pristine wilderness areas. Guests can look forward to thrilling game drives spotting iconic wildlife. Here water safaris by boat or traditional mokoro (dugout canoe) explore the waterways where elephants wade, and countless birds brighten the sky. Guided walks are also on offer with our passionate guides, who enthral with their deep knowledge and love of the bush. In camp, guests can enjoy a leisurely afternoon at their suite’s private pool, soaking in the glorious views and watching the wildlife parade. Evenings are a sensorial adventure, recounting the day’s safari by a crackling fire and feasting on our chefs’ local delights.
Purpose: The Vumbura Private Wilderness Area is leased from remote rural communities who are members of the Okavango Community Trust (OCT). The result of this long-standing and impactful partnership includes socio-economic benefits, livelihood diversification, and training and skills development for the villagers – as well as building on a positive attitude to tourism and conservation. The largest number of employees within our Botswana operation are employed from these five villages.
Wildlife: The annually inundated grasslands of the Delta surrounding Wilderness Vumbura Plains are locally referred to as melapo, and deliver prolific seasonal viewing: elephants, giraffes, impala, sable antelope, kudu, zebra, common waterbuck as well as reedbuck, tsessebe, wildebeest, red lechwe and Cape buffalo. Following this exceptional diversity of ungulates is a vast array of predators, including iconic African species such as lion, leopard, the occasional cheetah, African wild dog and wildcat. This all results in an immensely rich and thrilling wildlife experience. Hippo pods and basking crocodiles can often be spotted in and along the waterways, while birding is exceptional all year round.
Wilderness Vumbura: Celebrating its sense of space and purpose, this stylish and contemporary camp provides the highest level in comfort, wonderful local cuisine and impressive attention to detail from the warm and professional staff members.
Set on raised decks in the midst of annually inundated grassland the camp is a marvel of engineering design. An artful, contemporary balance of wood, glass, and canvas, reflecting the rich colours of the Delta.
It comprises two satellite camps, each with its own main area encompassing expansive vistas across the vast floodplains, and furnished with beautiful local objets d’art, which showcase the camp’s successful partnership with the Okavango Community Trust (OCT) – created to highlight Vumbura's heritage through design and art.
The camp is one of the most spacious offerings in the Okavango Delta, with generous and supremely private guest suites each featuring a plunge pool and outdoor sala.
Overnight at Vumbura (3 Nights) – Fully inclusive
Days: 4-7
MOREMI GAME RESERVE
After the morning activity at Vumbura guests will catch their light aircraft transfer to Mombo.
Destination: A beacon of conservation tourism, Wilderness Mombo leaves a light footprint in Botswana’s wild, wonderful Moremi Game Reserve. This part of the Okavango Delta is renowned for exceptional game viewing, particularly in summer when all manner of species congregate naturally here. With its mix of habitats attracting large herds, followed by predators in vast numbers and variety, discover why Mombo is truly the ‘Mother of all Camps’. Pristine floodplains, meandering channels and palm-fringed islands make up the Eden that is the Okavango Delta – a UNESCO World Heritage site where the water is so pure and clear, you can drink it.
Experience: Sightings at Wilderness Mombo are unparalleled. Encounter healthy populations of predators, sizeable elephant and buffalo herds and an abundance of ungulates. Close-up wildlife encounters in or near camp or at the hide are common, but nothing beats the thrill of out-of-camp game-viewing here – whether by vehicle or from a helicopter (additional costs apply).
Meals at Mombo are designed with conservation in mind, made with healthy ingredients sourced as locally as possible.
Days at Wilderness Mombo end with tranquil evenings on the deck and nights under the stars.
Purpose: On its private traversing area, Mombo has initiated a baobab conservation project after recognising the urgent need to protect these ancient trees. Twenty-six young trees are now protected here, with new saplings also under protection. The baobabs are fenced with log-piles and chicken wire mesh to allow the trees to recover and thrive.
Wildlife: The region around Wilderness Mombo is known as the ‘Place of Plenty’ by the local Bayei people. From big cats to never-ending herds of antelope, elephant and buffalo, massive concentrations of plains game and predators call this region of the Delta home. Sometimes, Africa’s rarer species reveal themselves, too. Catch a glimpse of a pangolin or honey badger, or the packs of wild dogs and cheetah coalitions that roam freely through the area. Over 400 species of birds flock to the Okavango Delta, including specials like the Pel’s fishing owl and endangered wattled cranes.
Wilderness Mombo: Rebuilt in 2018, our flagship camp maintains the spirit of the original African safari, and continues to garner numerous awards and accolades with its refurbishment. Repurposing original material and using added natural elements, with a minimal human footprint and 100% solar status, Wilderness Mombo has thoroughly maintained the integrity of its pristine surrounds.
Wild fig trees and mangosteens tower over the elevated guest tents – spacious canvas suites perched on wooden decks – positioned perfectly to watch the wildlife parade on the floodplain beyond.
Overnight at Mombo (3 Nights)- Fully inclusive
Day 7: End of Safari
After a final morning activity, guests will depart the camp for Maun Airport where they will continue with onward travel arrangements.
