Nyerere National Park, formerly Selous, is Tanzania’s largest national park. Shaped by the mighty Rufiji River, its lakes and channels make it the only place in Tanzania where you can enjoy boat safaris alongside classic game drives and guided walks.
Home to around a third of Tanzania’s African hunting dogs, Nyerere National Park is a predator haven where lions and leopards also roam. Flat miombo woodlands stretch across the landscape, dotted with wildebeest, buffalo, impala and warthog. Along the Rufiji River, birdlife thrives, from nesting bee-eaters to darting kingfishers.
Ruaha, Tanzania’s second-largest national park, is a wild crossroads where northern and southern hemisphere species meet — boasting 530 bird species, 1,400 plants, and a rich variety of mammals. The Great Ruaha River is its lifeline, drawing lions (the largest population in Tanzania), elephants, kudu, roan, and buffalo to its banks, where hippos and crocs wallow in the water. With a superb road network, you can explore different routes by day and spend leisurely afternoons unwinding on your veranda by night, watching wildlife wander past before ending with a sunset game drive to the hippo pool.
