A truly magical recreation of a bygone era. Our African Empire Routes retrace the journeys of Imperial Airways and BOAC to and from South Africa. Our ports-of-call are inspired by the experiences of passengers on the historic flying boat routes.
The Empire Routes
In the 1930’s, air travel became far less of a novelty and more of a vital link between far-flung outposts. Carrying mail, businessmen, government officials and travellers, the Imperial Airways networks were among one of the most efficient travel systems of the time. Operated by a mix of flying boats and later land planes, the airline establish way points along the routes to service the passengers and aircrafts.
In some locations, passengers dropped in for lunch before continuing their journeys, in others, they disembarked to spend the night in glamourous hotels and danced the nights away before rejoining the flight the next morning. Our Empire Expeditions follows these routes and celebrate their pioneering spirit.
