Northern Namibia – Wildlife & Conservation
9 Nights | From Etosha’s Great Wildlife Plains to Conservation, Close Encounters & Refined Wilderness
What if your journey through Namibia was all about getting closer to the wild?
Closer to elephants wandering through the landscape. Closer to rhinos on foot. Closer to the science behind wildlife conservation. And sometimes, at Encounter by Ongava, so close that elephants may decide the lodge pool looks like the perfect place for a drink.
This journey through northern Namibia is designed for travellers whose hearts beat a little faster when wildlife appears on the horizon.
Beginning with a relaxed night in Windhoek, you travel north to Ongava Private Game Reserve and the legendary wildlife landscapes of Etosha National Park. From the private wilderness of Ongava, the journey continues to Etosha’s eastern side at the elegant Mushara Outpost, before heading south to Okonjima Nature Reserve, where wildlife encounters meet research and conservation.
Finally, two indulgent nights at Gmundner Lodge give you time to slow down, enjoy the wilderness and end your journey in comfort.
Four exceptional stays. Two very different sides of Etosha. Countless opportunities to encounter Namibia’s wildlife – and nine nights you will remember for much longer.

Days 2–3 – Where the Wildlife Comes to You
Encounter by Ongava – 2 Nights
Leave Windhoek behind and travel north towards one of Namibia’s greatest wildlife regions.
Your destination is Ongava Private Game Reserve, bordering Etosha National Park – and your home for the next two nights is appropriately named Encounter by Ongava.
Because here, wildlife encounters are not always something you have to go looking for.
The private reserve is home to an extraordinary diversity of wildlife, and the lodge’s location allows nature to remain wonderfully close. Elephants are known to wander right up to the lodge – and have even discovered that the swimming pool makes a rather tempting drinking spot.
Imagine sitting quietly at the lodge when an elephant suddenly appears. No engine. No vehicle. Just you, the silence and one of Africa’s most magnificent animals passing through.
But Ongava offers much more than these spontaneous encounters. Its private-reserve setting allows experiences that are not possible during a conventional self-drive through Etosha. Head out after dark on a night drive, track rhinos on foot with an experienced guide and spend time understanding the conservation and research that underpin this remarkable reserve.
A visit to the Ongava Discovery Centre adds an especially important dimension to your stay, helping you understand the wildlife, ecosystems, research and conservation work behind everything you experience outside.
And with Etosha next door, you have access to another completely different safari world.
Activities & Highlights
- Guided game drives on Ongava Private Game Reserve
- Rhino tracking on foot with experienced guides
- Night drives in search of Ongava’s nocturnal wildlife
- Excursions into Etosha National Park
- Visit the Ongava Discovery Centre and gain fascinating insights into the reserve’s ecosystems, wildlife, research and conservation
- Birding and guided nature experiences
- Exceptional wildlife viewing around the lodge
- The possibility of elephants visiting the lodge – and even drinking from the swimming pool
- Sundowners surrounded by the African wilderness
Days 4–5 – Across Etosha to the East
Mushara Outpost – 2 Nights
Your journey continues through Namibia’s most famous wildlife destination: Etosha National Park.
Travelling from Ongava in the south towards Mushara on Etosha’s eastern side gives you the opportunity to experience the enormous scale of the park. The landscape constantly changes as you follow dusty roads between waterholes, never knowing what might be waiting around the next corner.
A herd of elephants crossing the road. Giraffes appearing between the trees. Zebra gathering around a waterhole. Perhaps even a lion resting in the shade.
Just eight kilometres from the Von Lindequist Gate, Mushara Outpost provides an elegant base from which to continue exploring eastern Etosha.
After your safari adventures, return to the lodge, slow down and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Mushara itself is your place to relax; the wildlife adventures take place inside nearby Etosha National Park.
Activities & Highlights
- Full- or half-day guided game drives in Etosha National Park
- Self-drive exploration of Etosha
- Visit Etosha’s famous waterholes
- Search for elephants, lions, giraffes, zebra and numerous antelope species
- Excellent birding opportunities within Etosha
- Relax by the pool between safari excursions
- Enjoy sundowners and atmospheric evenings at the lodge
Experience a quieter, more intimate base close to Etosha’s eastern gate
Days 6–7 – Follow the Tracks
Okonjima Luxury Bush Camp – 2 Nights
Leave Etosha behind and travel south to Okonjima Nature Reserve.
At first, it may seem like another wildlife stop.
But Okonjima asks you to look closer.
Home to the AfriCat Foundation, the reserve brings together tourism, long-term research and conservation. Here, your wildlife experiences are not simply about finding an animal and taking a photograph – they are an opportunity to understand how these animals live, move and survive within Namibia’s landscapes.
Stay at the intimate Okonjima Luxury Bush Camp and head into the reserve with experienced guides.
Track leopards through the bush. Search for brown hyenas. Join a rhino tracking experience on foot or, when conditions and availability allow, discover the secretive world of pangolins.
The Into AfriCat – Behind the Science experience takes you even deeper, revealing the people, technology, fieldwork and long-term data behind AfriCat’s research.
After the vast, open safari landscapes of Etosha, Okonjima offers something wonderfully different:
the chance not only to see wildlife, but to understand it.

Days 8–9 – One Last Taste of the Wild
Gmundner Lodge – 2 Nights
Your final journey takes you south towards Gmundner Lodge, where the adventure ends not with a rush back to the airport, but with two days to slow down.
Set within thousands of hectares of private nature, this Relais & Châteaux retreat combines Namibian wilderness with exceptional hospitality, beautiful accommodation and a farm-to-table philosophy.
After days filled with early safari mornings and exciting wildlife encounters, Gmundner gives you freedom to decide exactly how your journey should end.
Perhaps you are not finished exploring yet. Head out into the reserve, discover the landscape on horseback or by SunCycle, or try one of the lodge’s many activities.
Or perhaps the greatest luxury now is doing very little at all.
Enjoy a long lunch. Spend the afternoon beside the pool. Watch one final sunset. Look up at Namibia’s immense night sky and realise just how much you have experienced in nine nights.
With its convenient location for your onward journey towards Hosea Kutako International Airport, Gmundner is also a wonderfully relaxed finale – allowing your holiday to continue until almost the very last moment.

Where the Wild Things Stay With You
This journey may begin with the hope of seeing Namibia’s wildlife.
But somewhere along the way, it becomes something more.
It is an elephant quietly approaching the water at Ongava. The anticipation of following rhino tracks on foot. A morning spent watching Etosha slowly come alive around a waterhole. The excitement of searching for a leopard at Okonjima – and discovering the science behind its story.
And then there are the quieter memories.
Dinner beneath an enormous sky. Dusty roads disappearing towards the horizon. A cold drink after a long day outside. The sounds of the bush after darkness falls.
Northern Namibia – Wildlife & Conservation combines some of the country’s most rewarding wildlife destinations with conservation, comfort and enough time to truly experience each place.
Because the best safari is not simply about how many animals you see.
It is about the moments when you suddenly realise just how close to the wild you really are.
