We recreate one of the world’s greatest journeys, travelling from London all the way to Sydney, retracing the pioneering airline routes as they flew the mail and fortunate passengers halfway around the world to far-flung Australia.
Our ports-of-call are inspired by the experiences of passengers on the historic Flying boats. Qantas first flew the Kangaroo Route direct on 1 December 1947. A Lockheed Constellation carried 29 passengers and 11 crew from Sydney to London with stops in Darwin, Singapore, Calcutta, Karachi, Cairo, and Tripoli. A return fare was £585, equivalent to 130 weeks average pay.
Operated by a mix of flying boats and later land planes, the airline established way points along the routes to service the passengers and aircrafts.
The first original services actually began in 1935 with Qantas operating the flight from Sydney to Singapore where it linked up with the Imperial Airways flights to London. The ABC Guide for September 1947 shows six flights a week from Sydney to England: three Lancastrians that took 77 hr 30 min to Heathrow and three flying boats that took 168 hr 55 min to Poole.
