Located on the southern edge of the Okavango Delta, the town of Maun serves as the gateway to the northern regions of Botswana. For more than a century, this dusty town has been the starting point for expeditions to the North-West District of Botswana, which has become known as the country's safari capital. Many Okavango-oriented activities are available right on your doorstep. Taking a scenic flight over the southern delta is a wonderful way to see classic Botswana wildlife and big game. There are game reserves, safari tours, boat cruises, and overnight camping are some of the few things to be enjoyed here.

Okavango Panhandle

Days 3 - 4

The Okavango Panhandle in Botswana is the main water source for the Okavango Delta. It is a 70 km stretch of the river that starts where it enters Botswana and ends in the Delta. To the west of the Panhandle is a rocky outcrop called Tsodilo Hills, an area with fascinating cave paintings and hiking trails. The area is perfect for catching Tigerfish and bream due to the deep and fast-flowing river. There are 17 species of fish in the area. Bird watching is also excellent in the region's tall, shady riverine forests, where you can see both resident and migratory birds.

Tsodilo Hills

Located in the far reaches of northwestern Botswana, the Tsodilo Hills mark the highest point in the country. Abruptly rising 400 metres from the vast western Kalahari, these hills consist of four distinct mounds: the female, the male, the child and an even smaller ‘kopje’. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the famed Tsodilo Hills are home to more than 4000 remarkable rock paintings and considered a sacred space for the San people. It is said that the Tsodilo Hills are one of the world’s oldest historical sites, which have been inhabited on and off for the last 60 000 years. Visitors can enjoy guided tours around this ancient spiritual mecca.

Northern Botswana hosts the Okavango Delta, a vast inland delta, and it is known as the world’s largest intact delta. This region is renowned for its expansive grasslands, which flood seasonally, providing a rich habitat for animals. The Okavango River feeds it during the drier months. The fan-shaped delta is a network of papyrus-fringed stretches that connect open areas teeming with water lilies. The Moremi Game Reserve covers the eastern and central parts of the region. Here, dugout canoes manoeuvre past hippos, elephants and crocodiles. On dry land, wildlife includes lions, leopards, giraffes and rhinos.

Moremi Game Reserve

Days 9 - 11

Moremi Game Reserve is a protected area in Botswana. It is found in the eastern parts of the Okavango Delta - home to one of Africa's richest ecosystems. The reserve homes the region's major herbivores and carnivores, and there have been recent reintroductions of Black and White Rhinos, making it a Big Five destination. Here, visitors can enjoy game-viewing in abundance and be amazed by the Delta's prolific birdlife. Explore this wildlife wonder by vehicle, foot, traditional mokoro, or horseback safaris. Boat cruises, elephant interactions, helicopter rides and walking safaris are all activities offered at Moremi.
