Indonesië is met 18.110 eilanden, waarvan 6.000 bewoond, de grootste archipel ter wereld met ongeëvenaarde vakantiemogelijkheden. Het pittoreske eiland Bali is de bekendste en meest toeristische bestemming.
Al is Bali slechts één van de vele kleine eilanden in Indonesië, het is zonder twijfel één van de bekendste eilanden en "Paradise Island" genoemd vanwege zijn tropisch paradijs met een onnoemelijke prachtige natuur, een idyllische sfeer. Het eiland is tevens "Het eiland der Goden" omdat de dagelijkse hindoeïstische ceremonies elk facet van hun leven kleurt.
Het is één van de plaatsen ter wereld waar je een warme gastvrijheid ervaart die typerend is voor de Balinezen.
Bali beslaat slechts een oppervlakte van ongeveer 6000 vierkante kilometer. De langste afstand is ongeveer 140 kilometer. Bali ligt net voorbij de oostelijke punt van Java, gescheiden door de smalle Straat van Bali en ten oosten ervan ligt het eiland Lombok. Aan de zuid- en noordkant van het eiland liggen de Indische Oceaan en de Javazee. Het eiland ligt acht graden ten zuiden van de evenaar.
Heuvels en bergen vullen de centrale delen van het eiland en lopen langs een oost-westas die van nature is versierd met prachtige meren en rivieren die langzaam slingeren naar zee. De hoogste berg van Bali is de berg Agung (3.142 m), waar de Besakih-moedertempel zich op de helling bevindt.
Indonesië heeft verder nog meer te bieden buiten de gebaande paden. Mature travellers will delight in the relaxed seaside ambience of Candi Dasa, located at the edge of a freshwater lagoon in eastern Bali. A popular tourist spot since the ‘70s, this seaside town is renowned for its laid-back atmosphere, and superb snorkelling and diving conditions. The most impressive dive sites are around the rocky islets of Gili Selang, Gili Biaha, Gili Mimpang and Gili Tepekong, where divers can see exquisite coral gardens, several species of sharks and, between August and October, enormous oceanic sunfish, which grow up to six feet. A visit to Pura Candi Dasa, twin temples devoted to Shiva and Hariti, set atop the hillside overlooking the lagoon, proves a fascinating expedition.
Pemuteran, in het noordwesten van Bali, is de perfecte plek voor ontspanning zoals snorkelen en duiken en gekend voor de schitterende zonsondergangen. Ver weg van de luidruchtige strandfeestscène van Kuta, in de centrale regio van dit opmerkelijke kleine eiland, ligt Ubud - het culturele centrum van Bali. Omringd door weelderige terrasvormige rijstvelden en prachtige tempels, heeft Ubud veel toeristische attracties. Het drukke stadscentrum is bezaaid met kunstgalerijen, cafés, ambachtswinkels en kuuroorden. Eén van de meest bezochte sites van de stad is het Sacred Forest Monkey Sanctuary, waar honderden wilde apen leven, evenals drie Hindi-tempels. Flaneer door de levendige straten in het centrum of ontsnap aan de drukte door een fiets te huren en de rijstvelden te verkennen, waar het traditionele dorpsleven relatief ongestoord verdergaat.
On Indonesia's uniquely beautiful island of Flores is the Kelimutu National Park, home to the mystical Mount Kelimutu volcano, famous for its three multi-coloured lakes. Although they share the crest of the same volcano and sit side-by-side, the lakes periodically and unpredictably change colours independently of one another depending on the volcano's activities or, according to the local inhabitants, on the mood of the ancestral spirits! Kelimutu is renowned as the only place on earth where this remarkable colour variation phenomenon takes place. Other park highlights include some steaming hot springs, breathtaking waterfalls and a fascinating cultural heritage with traditional architecture, dances, and ikat weaving still playing an integral role in the lives of the local people. The small farming village of Moli lies near the volcano and makes an excellent base for exploring the park.
Take a step back in time in Bajawa, a charming hill town surrounded by an alpine landscape in the central highlands of Flores. The most popular of these is Bena, where you can get a glimpse into the homes and lives of the native people, including displays of traditional fighting and dance. For a taste of the pristine natural surroundings, visit the authentic villages, discover one of the numerous waterfalls in the area, or spend a day relaxing in the hot springs amid the forest-covered mountains. Dominating the skyline around Bajawa is the nearby Gunung Inerie, the highest volcano on Flores and a rewarding trekking opportunity that boasts breathtaking scenery from the extraordinary summit.
A small Catholic town at the foot of a mountain range, Ruteng, on the island of Flores, welcomes visitors who come to see the ancient Manggarai custom of 'caci', or whip fighting. While there, take the opportunity to view the unique spider web rice fields, a dramatic landscape unlike any other on the planet, which offers fantastic photography opportunities. Another reason to visit the area is the Liang Bua limestone cave, slightly north of the town, where in 2003 a potentially new species of Homo genus was discovered.
Like many other popular tourist spots in Indonesia, Labuan Bajo, in the far Western region of Flores, was once a sleepy fishing village. Today it functions as a bustling departure point for visitors wanting to go explore the nearby Komodo archipelago – home to the legendary Komodo ‘dragons’, huge prehistoric lizards that can weigh up to 70 kilograms and grow up to three metres in length. Beyond the opportunity to encounter these fearsome reptiles in their natural habitat, travellers also visit the area for the outstanding diving and snorkelling conditions. Shark diving, dolphin and whale watching and all manner of water sports are also popular activities for holidaymakers.
Als u Kuta te wild vindt en Nusa Dua te rustig, dan is Sanur wellicht de regio waar u naar op zoek bent. Sanur heeft veel energieks te bieden en beschikt over gezinsvriendelijke stranden maar is toch iets milder in ambiance tegenover Kuta. In juli organiseert men in Sanur het International Kite Festival. De schitterende blauwe lucht is dan gevuld met kleurrijke vliegers in alle soorten en maten. U kan in Sanur ook het Le Mayeur Museum bezoeken. Dit was het voormalige huis van de gelijknamige kunstenaar. Meer zin in natuur?
