The region of Central Chile contains the capital city of Santiago, with its pulsating energy and vibrant cultural scene, as well as some fantastic out-of-the-way destinations and some astounding natural sights. Pichilemu is one of the continent’s premiere surfing destinations, while the UNESCO-listed Valparaiso - with its gorgeous hillside setting, colourful buildings and historic harbour area - is one of Chile’s most popular places to visit. The region is also home to a number of fine ski resorts (such as Valle Nevado and Portillo), incredible walking and hiking trails in the waterfall-rich Radal Siete Tazas National Reserve, and some appealing coastal destinations, like Renaca, Vina del Mar and Cobquecura. Cobquecura also offers convenient access to the island of Loberia, which is famous for its impressive wildlife, including large numbers of sea lions and seals.
Situated in Chile’s Patagonian region, Torres del Paine National Park is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve renowned for its dramatic mountain landscapes and diverse ecosystems. Covering 227,298 hectares, the park encompasses granite peaks, glaciers, waterfalls, forests, grasslands and turquoise lakes. Its most recognizable landmark is the three granite towers of the Paine Massif, which rise above the surrounding landscape. The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including guanacos, pumas, Andean condors, foxes and the endangered Chilean huemul. Visitors can explore the area through an extensive network of hiking trails, with opportunities for trekking, wildlife viewing, photography, horse riding and boat excursions. Located near Bernardo O’Higgins National Park and Argentina’s Los Glaciares National Park, Torres del Paine forms part of a spectacular wilderness region spanning southern Chile and Argentina.
Situated deep in Patagonia’s snow-capped vistas, on the southern shore of Lake Argentino, El Calafate has become a key stopover for travellers headed to nearby Los Glaciares National Park. This icy wonderland is best known as the home of spectacular Perito Moreno glacier – a massive, shifting ice cap composed of dozens of smaller glaciers. Take a glacier tour, a helicopter ride, or a 4x4 excursion; hike and boat to your heart’s content; or visit one of the traditional ‘ranchos’ (estancias) to learn more about local culture (another great spot for this is the Centro de Interpretacíon Historico). A wonderful selection of restaurants and boutiques adds appeal; make sure to try the ‘alfajores’ cookies. Drink vodka, watch a movie, and learn all about ice at the impressive Glaciarium.
Resting in the foothills of Argentina’s Andes Mountain Range, Mendoza has a rich gastronomic heritage, and produces some of Argentina’s most exceptional wines and olive oil. Gourmands can participate in tours and tastings at the many wineries and sample delicious local cuisine at the laid-back cafes. The city also boasts a number of historic attractions, most notably the Museo Fundacional which displays the town’s progress through human evolution, and the Museo Historico General San Martin which honours Jose de San Martin, the general who liberated Argentina from the Spanish. Other highlights include: charming, well-kept parks; bustling, fountain-adorned plazas; and the opportunity for picturesque hiking, skiing and rafting in the nearby Andes. Several exquisite churches and art-deco architecture add to the town’s landscape.
Resting in a valley surrounded by the snow-capped Andes and the Chilean Coast Range, Chile’s vibrant, cosmopolitan, the capital city of Santiago is famous for its beautiful parks, a wealth of historical attractions, and exciting arts and music scenes. The Cerro San Cristobal Park, the largest green space in the city, lies on a hill and is reached by a funicular ride.
