Situated just over three hours’ drive inland from the Australian west-coast town of Cairns, in the Shire of Mareeba, Queensland, the former mining town of Mount Milligan has an interesting cultural significance, breathtaking natural history, and an array of outdoor sports on offer. Once the location of a mining disaster, the area is still beautiful and is now home to a luxury resort, which offers guests various ways to enjoy the surrounds. There is plenty to explore among the unspoilt forests and outback, ancient sandstone bluffs and diversity of wildlife. The mountain is home to a rich Aboriginal heritage, known as the birthplace of the ‘Rainbow Serpent’ and hosting two of the oldest known aboriginal sites in Queensland. Visitors can take part in a range of activities including bushwalking, birdwatching, swimming, kayaking, quad biking, horse riding, helicopter flights, and gold fossicking.
