Located at the mouth of the photogenic Gascoyne River, the large coastal town of Carnarvon serves as an ideal base for exploring the world-famous Ningaloo Reef, Mount Augustus, the Kennedy Ranges, and the area’s numerous coastal villages. Wide stretches of plantations spread along the riverbanks, producing a host of delicious tropical fruits, and the town itself boasts some quirky attractions, a selection of well-stocked supermarkets, and great local produce (make sure to try the fabulously fresh seafood at one of the town’s excellent restaurants). While some visitors are drawn to Carnavon for its impressive culinary scene, others are attracted by the exquisite beachside hideaways of nearby Quobba Station, Red Bluff and Gnaraloo, which provide some of the state’s best fishing, surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, swimming and whale-watching.
