Widely regarded as one of East Africa’s most dynamic and cosmopolitan cities, Nairobi sits along the Nairobi River and serves as Kenya’s capital and largest urban centre, acting as a major gateway for safari travel across the country. The city features a growing café culture, active nightlife, and cultural landmarks such as the National Museum of Kenya and the Karen Blixen Museum. Just outside the city centre lies Nairobi National Park, where wildlife, including lions, giraffes, and buffalo, roam against a backdrop of skyscrapers — one of the rare cases in the world where a major national park borders a capital city. Visitors also often stop at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage for close encounters with rescued calves.
Located in Taita-Taveta County in south-eastern Kenya, Tsavo West National Park covers more than 9,000 square kilometres, making it one of the country’s largest and most dramatic protected areas. Its varied scenery includes volcanic cones, lava flows, rocky outcrops, swamps, wooded grasslands, riverine forests, plains, lakes, and natural springs. The otherworldly Shetani Lava Flows, named after the Swahili word for “devil”, spread across the savannah in striking black layers. Other notable features include Chaimu Crater, the panoramic viewpoint at Roaring Rocks, and Mzima Springs, a series of crystal-clear freshwater pools that sustain hippos, crocodiles, and abundant birdlife. Wildlife enthusiasts can look for highly endangered black rhinos at the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, alongside elephants, buffalo, waterbuck, eland, impala, Maasai giraffe, and many other species.
Located in the southern reaches of Kenya, the Amboseli National Park is renowned for its excellent variety of wildlife such as Maasai giraffe, elephant, lion and cheetah and not surprisingly it is one of Kenya's most popular parks. The landscape of Amboseli is dominated by the majestic snowcap of Mount Kilimanjaro, as well as open plains, acacia woodland, swamps and the massif of Ol Doinyo Orok. The birding is excellent, especially closer to the lakes and swamps. The park is famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to large herds of elephants among other wildlife species. Other attractions include opportunities to meet the Maasai people and soak up spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world.
Rising up from the heart of the Kenyan landscape, the snow-capped Mount Kenya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is Africa's second highest mountain reaching an impressive 5199 metres in height, which is an awe-inspiring sight. Visitors can explore its surrounding forests, trout-filled streams and game reserve; more adventurous travellers can summit the peak. While Mount Kilimanjaro is an easier climb, Mount Kenya is more of a challenge as it has a higher technical difficulty, however, Point Lenana can be easily reached by a fit hiker. Visitors can look forward to a variety of wonderful activities such as: cave exploration, mountain climbing, camping, and game viewing. Commonly spotted wildlife include: elephant, mongoose, duiker, bushbuck, eland and over 130 bird species.
Set on the banks of the Ewaso Ng'iro River and neighbouring the Buffalo Springs National Park, Samburu National Reserve is characterised by a spectacular landscape of rugged hills, undulating plains and riverine forests. The park is home to abundant wildlife including a variety of rare species such as the reticulated giraffe, the long-necked gerenuk, Somali ostrich, Grevy's Zebra, and Beisa Oryx. Visitors can also enjoy spotting over 900 elephants, a variety of predators, and over 450 bird species. The ancient culture of the Samburu people is still alive here, and it is possible to see two unique customs firsthand. In the first, watch as herds of cattle respond to each man’s individual voice as they call. In the second, see the tribesmen perform incredible dances that go back hundreds of years.
Situated in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, around 90 kilometres north-west of Nairobi, Naivasha is a lively town that serves as the gateway to Lake Naivasha, one of the country's most important freshwater lakes. The surrounding Lake Naivasha basin is a popular base for exploring volcanic landscapes, nature reserves and national parks. Visitors can take boat trips across the water to spot hippos and a wide variety of birdlife, walk among free-roaming giraffes, zebras and antelope on Crescent Island, or explore the dramatic gorges and cliffs of Hell’s Gate National Park on foot or by bicycle. Surrounded by acacia woodland and Rift Valley escarpments, the region offers a distinctive blend of outdoor adventure, wildlife encounters and natural beauty.
Situated in southwestern Kenya, the Masai Mara encompasses the celebrated national reserve and its surrounding community conservancies, forming part of the Greater Serengeti–Mara ecosystem. Rolling savannahs, dotted with acacia trees and crossed by the Mara River, create a rich and varied landscape. Vast herds of wildebeest, zebra, and antelope graze across the plains, while elephants, giraffes, and buffalo roam freely.
