Stromness is the second largest town within the Orkney Archipelago, a small group of islands lying off Scotland’s northern coast. An attractive seaside village, compact Stromness makes a wonderful base for exploring Orkney Island’s several UNESCO-listed prehistoric sights. Chief among these are Skara Brae, a prehistoric village uncovered after a storm in 1850; the Ring of Brodgar and the Standing Stones of Stenness, two Neolithic burial monuments; and the ancient tomb of Maeshowe. Meanwhile, back in town, be sure to check out the interesting and varied collections of the Stromness Museum and the Pier Arts Centre, a fantastic exhibition gallery. Active travellers will relish the short hike up Brinkies Brae, while from Stromness it is also possible to take ferry trips to the island of Hoy and Scrabster, located on mainland Scotland.
