Once overflowing with prospectors, the area is now dotted with artistic little towns, whose gallery and studio doors beckon, and guest ranches, where eager hosts will set you on the right course for a canoeing, river-rafting or hiking adventure. There’s plenty of fishing and wildlife to see, and an amble through the historically preserved Barkerville with its 125 heritage buildings is a highlight of the area. The true Cariboo runs South to North and is best explored via the Gold Rush Trail.
