De central Namibian highlands zijn veel koeler en milder dan grote delen van Namibië. Hier ligt ook de hoofdstad Windhoek - die maar 180.000 inwoners telt - en het geografische en politieke centrum van het land is. Omdat het hoog ligt, hangt er een prettige en koele bergsfeer. Neem de tijd om het koloniale centrum te verkennen. De Lutherse kerk aan de Peter Mullerstrasse is zeker een bezoek waard en een handig oriëntatiepunt bij een wandeling door de stad. In Windhoek vindt u een mengelmoes van Afrikaanse culturen, maar er is ook een duidelijk merkbare Duitse invloed die verwijst naar de koloniale heersers die de stad hebben gesticht. In het straatbeeld vallen de mooi uitgedoste Herero-vrouwen zeker op. Windhoek heeft enkele uitstekende restaurants.
As there is no accommodation at Sossusvlei, visitors to this desert wilderness are likely to end up staying at Sesriem, 65 kilometres away, where camps and lodges serve as a base from which to explore the dunes. Sesriem Canyon, a deep chasm carved through the rocks by water, is a striking natural feature of the area that is best explored on foot. Stony walls rise up sharply on both sides of the canyon, while birds roost in its crags and lizards dart along the ledges. The canyon’s name was coined when early settlers used it as a water source, using six lengths of leather (‘ses riem – six thongs) tied together to lower buckets into the water at the base of canyon.)

Dankzij de straten met palmbomen, de zeedijk en de aangename stranden is Swakopmund een echt vakantieoord geworden. Gesticht in 1892 als hoofd haven van de Duitsers in Zuid-West Afrika, ademt de plaats nog steeds een zeer Duitse sfeer, met name door de typische koloniale architectuur. U kunt hier bijvoorbeeld, als bij onze Oosterburen, in een Konditorei een Sachertorte bestellen! De kuststrook ten noorden van Swakopmund staat, vanwege de vele scheepswrakken die hier op de kust liepen, bekend als de Skeleton Coast. Het gebied is één van de droogste woestijnen ter wereld, terwijl voor de kust een van ’s werelds rijkste viswateren stroomt. U kunt een vlucht boven de Skeleton Coast maken, waar u de geraamtes van scheepswrakken half boven de zandduinen ziet uitsteken. Het contrast tussen de verlaten woestijn en de blauwe zee is indrukwekkend. Dichter bij Swakopmund zijn ook zandduinen te vinden, die uitnodigen tot sandboarding en tot tochten met quadbikes.
Vanaf Hentiesbaai kun je naar de zeerobbenkolonie bij Cape Cross. De Cape Fur Seal Colony bij Cape Cross, is een zeehondenkolonie van zo’n 80.000 dieren. Een muurtje is de afscheiding waar u staat en waar deze zoogdieren in de zon liggen en vissen. Hier zie je ook vaak de jakhals en soms de bruine hyena die op zoek zijn naar makkelijke prooien.
Bij een bezoek aan Walvisbaai raden wij u aan om op de kustweg tussen de duinen en de Atlantische kust te rijden naar Walvis Bay (circa 32km) en hier een dolphin cruise te maken met Laramon Tours. Comfortabel op een catamaran door de baai en de lagunes. De kans bestaat dat u pelikanen, flamingo’s en andere zeevogels ziet, maar ook zeehonden en dolfijnen komen er voor. U wordt bij uw guesthouse opgehaald en teruggebracht en drankjes, snacks en oesters zijn inbegrepen.

Situated in the western part of Etosha National park, a world-famous wildlife sanctuary in the northwestern part of Namibia, Etosha West is the wilder western region accessed through Galton Gate. Visitors to Etosha West can look forward to exploring the magnificent scenery of this remote north Namibian landscape characterised by lush undulating terrain and a reddish-brown soil, which is a stark contrast to the white dusty clay soil of Etosha East’s flat expansive plains. This area is home to several species not found in the rest of the park: baboons, Mountain Zebra, and Brown Hyena, as well as several unique plants. The area also boasts numerous waterholes attracting elephant, rhino, leopard, lion, a variety of buck, and around 300 bird species.
Located in Northwestern Namibia, Etosha East is a protected sanctuary in the eastern part of the world-renowned Etosha National Park, known as one of the most accessible game reserves in Southern Africa. Etosha East boasts vast open plains scattered with semi-arid savannah grasslands dotted with watering holes and secluded bush camps. An impressive 5000-square-kilometre Etosha salt pan makes up a large area of the eastern side of the park and can even be seen from space. This remote area teems with abundant wildlife such as lions, elephants, black rhinos and giraffes, as well as a variety of birdlife featuring flamingos, ostriches, eagles, hornbills, and owls.
Bordering Angola, on the banks of the Okavango River in northern Namibia, the town of Rundu serves as the capital of the eastern Kavango region. Rundu is renowned for its local woodcarvers market and is filled with impressive woodcarvers' workshops. The town provides a great stopover to refuel for visitors heading to Katima Mulilo, enthralling Popa Falls, or Mahangu Game Reserve, home to the endangered wild dog and lion, leopard, elephant, cheetah, and hippo. Visitors to Rundu can also look forward to great game viewing, excellent bird watching as well as kayaking on the spectacular Kavango River.
Set roughly 200 kilometres east of Rundu on the southeastern banks of the great Okavango River, the small village of Divundu is a wonderful destination from which to explore the river, game parks and national reserves of the area. Visitors can enjoy fishing or bird watching boat safaris, or visit the Mahango Game Park, which is home to herds of elephant as well as hippo, buffalo, giraffes, antelope, and many other animals. The spectacular Popa Falls, a dramatic series of cascades - are a popular must-see attraction. Divundu is also the perfect base for adventures in Botswana and the Okavango Delta.
Als u op weg bent naar de Caprivi Regio, dan isGrootfontein het laatste plaatsje van betekenis op weg naar Rundu. In de omgeving van Grootfontein valt jaarlijks tussen de 450 en 650 mm regen – aanmerkelijk meer dan in de meeste delen van Namibië. Het vruchtbare gebied tussen Grootfontein, Tsumeb en Otavi is een belangrijk landbouwgebied, de zogenaamde Otavi-driehoek. In de streek wordt daardoor veel groente verbouwd, zoals maïs, sorghum, katoen, pinda’s en zonnebloemen.
De vruchtbare omgeving heeft door de eeuwen heen op veel mensen aantrekkingskracht uitgeoefend. De allereerste bewoners waren de Nama en San die de naam Gei-ous aan het gebied gaven, dat grote fontein betekent. Het Afrikaanse Grootfontein is hier een directe vertaling van. De Herero kwamen ook telkens naar Grootfonteinterug, dat zij in hun taal Otjiwandatjongue noemden: heuvel van het luipaard.
Het Grootfontein Museum, gevestigd in het historische fort, vertelt over de plaatselijke historie. De jacaranda en flamboyants bloeien in september en oktober. De paarslila en rode kleuren van deze bomen geven sfeer aan het gemoedelijke dorpje. De belangrijkste attractie van Grootfontein ligt zo’n 24 kilometer ten westen van de stad – op de plek waar de Hoba meteoriet80.000 jaar geleden neerkwam. Deze circa 60 ton wegende, praktisch volledig uit metaal bestaande kolos is voor een deel zichtbaar. Het is met afstand de grootste meteoriet op aarde en het grootste stuk ijzer op het aardoppervlak.
Located just north of Windhoek, in the central Namibian Otjozondjupa region, the bustling city of Okahandja serves as the main commercial centre of the area, as well as a prominent cultural centre for the local Herero people. The name ‘Okahandja', means 'The place where two rivers flow into each other to form one wide one.' These two seasonal rivers are the Okamita and the Okakango. Known as the ‘Garden Town of Namibia’, Okahandja boasts a rich cultural heritage, numerous historical sites and excellent bird watching in the surrounding areas. Visitors can look forward to a variety of interesting activities including: browsing the colourful arts and crafts market, visiting the nearby Gross Barmen Hot springs for a soak in the rejuvenating thermal waters and enjoying an array of watersports at the nearby Von Bach Dam.
