Situated in the Shandong Province of East China, the city of Qufu is the birthplace and hometown of the iconic philosopher Confucius. Known as one of the forefathers of modern China, the sage’s renown is known world-over; the city, filled with wonderful sites relating to the man, attracts interest from all corners of the globe. The must-see attractions, which are all UNESCO-listed, are the luxurious, maze-like Confucius Mansion; the Confucius Forest or Cemetary, a gorgeous pine and cypress park filled with monuments; and the grand Temple of Confucius, the country’s largest imperial building after the Forbidden City, filled with important texts and stone reliefs. Visitors may also enjoy strolling around the moat at night time when the city walls are decorated with lights.
Located in east-central China, the province of Henan is an absolute must for history lovers and for anyone who is curious about China’s rich and intricate past. Home to an impressive five UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the key destinations in Henan include three of the Seven Ancient Capitals of China, all located on the banks of the Yellow River: Kaifeng, Anyang and Luoyang. In Kaifeng you can admire the Daxiangguo Temple and stroll the historical quarter of Shudian Jie (Bookstore Street), while in Anyang there are Yin ruins from the Shang Dynasty dating back more than 3000 years. However, Luoyang holds the biggest appeal, offering access to the staggering Longmen National Park, a 5th-century system of grottoes and cave temples that contains thousands of carved inscriptions and Buddhist statues.
One of China’s Seven Ancient Capitals, Luoyang is centrally located in Henan Province and boasts some unforgettable historic sights. Begin in the atmospheric Old Town district to see the Lijing Gate and some buildings dating back to the Song Dynasty (such as the Wenfeng Pagoda). From there, visit the Ancient Tombs Museum, which showcases more than 20 tombs from the Han and Song Dynasty eras. The Luoyang Museum is also worth a look. However, Luoyang’s most important sight is the Longmen Grottoes. This UNESCO World Heritage Site on the banks of the Yi River is regarded as one of the finest sculptural sites in the world, with enormous rock carvings dating back to the 5th century presenting more than 100,000 different images of the Buddha.
