Key West je asi 6,4 km dlouhý a 2,3 km široký. Koncem 50. let minulého století byla řada zdejších odpařovacích jezírek sloužících dříve k těžbě soli zasypána, čímž se téměř zdvojnásobila pevninská plocha ostrova. Jeho nynější rozloha je 13,6 km2.
Key West, nejjižnější bod a konečná stanice severoamerického kontinentu, dál jezdí jen lodě. Na Kubu je to odtud respektive z konce ulice Whitehead pouhých 130 kilometrů. Historie ostrova je plná pirátů; koneckonců ostrov zbohatl ze zboží zachráněného ze stovek lodí, které ztroskotaly na místních korálových útesech. Vedle rybářů a lidí z celého světa, kterým se malé komunity zalíbily, zde pobývala také řada spisovatelů a umělců. Z nichž nejznámějším byl Ernest Hemingway, který zde napsal román Komu zvoní hrana a Mít a nemít, a z jehož domu v ulici Whitehead je dnes muzeum. O něco dále žil Tennessee Williams, který si svůj dům z cypřišového dřeva nechal na prámu převézt až z Kuby.

Kill Devil Hills is an idyllic beach town set on North Carolina's Outer Banks, in Dare County. While filled with history and folklore, no one has ever quite figured out where the town got its name, although there are several stories. The town boasts lovely soft-sanded golden shores, and is fringed by grassy dunes and brightly coloured houses. One of the most important parts of the town’s past is the role it played in aviation - it was here, and not (as many believe) in neighbouring Kitty Hawk, where the Wright Brothers made their first successful flight (coming in at nine minutes) from a sand dune, in1903. New York City (City se píše proto, že také existuje New York stát) tak, jak si ho představujeme z fotografií, nesčetných filmů, videokazet i románů, to je vlastně jen ostrov Manhattan. Před Manhattanem je ovšem ještě do široka rozlitý Bronx. Město ze železa, cihel, traverz, vyhořelých domů, benzinových stanic, proluk, smetišť, činžáků, dětských hřišť, parkovišť, supermarketů. Působí jako zlověstná předzvěst ostrova, který má být pupkem světa.
V tomhle městě platí několik pravidel. Nenoste peníze, jezděte se zavřenými okénky u auta, nechoďte postranními ulicemi, nevycházejte v noci! New York City je totiž civilizovaným peklem.
V červenci se New York City peklu opravdu trochu přibližuje. Teplota dosahuje 32 stupňů Celsia, vlhkost vysoko přes 90 procent. New York se nepotí - New York se vaří. Teprve tváří v tvář tomuto živlu si uvědomíte jeden prostý fakt. Energetické nároky v létě jsou pro New York větší než v zimě. V ostatních státech je to přesně naopak, ale ne tady. Bez klimatizace se tu nedá žít. Ani v noci nepocítíte žádnou úlevu. Horko, dusno, do hlubokých kaňonů sálá z budov absorbované teplo dne, na ulicích narůstají hromady černých pytlů s odpadky.
Říká se, že New York není Amerika. Ale sami poznáte, že New York není ani New York, protože oficiálně je New York také State Island, Brooklyn, Queens a Bronx.
Když doma a ve světě říkáme New York, myslíme tím vlastně jen Manhattan, ostrov široký zhruba 3 kilometry a dlouhý 25 kilometrů, rozřezaný cirkulárkou na pravoúhlou síť ulic a avenues. Tady je napěchováno vše, co si pod pojmem New York představujeme – stovky mrakodrapů, 400 divadel, 400 galerií, podstatný podíl z 25 000 restaurací a 12 000 taxíků. Z taxíků jsou v New Yorku doslova žluté řeky. Z toho je zřejmé, že Manhattan je ve všech svých jednotlivostech a tvářích neuchopitelný, plně nepoznatelný a vždycky tak trochu i nepochopitelný.
