Rincon de la Vieja betekent “The Old Woman's Corner” en is vernoemd naar een lokale legende, die vertelt over de minnaar van een meisje die door haar vader in de vulkaan werd gegooid. Er wordt gezegd dat de vrouw een kluizenaar werd en helende krachten ontwikkelde, die haar dagen leefde op de hellingen van Rincon de la Vieja.
