This sprawling but tranquil town is known for its historic centre, an impressive UNESCO World Heritage Site complete with a maze of narrow cobblestone alleyways, hidden Spanish plazas, baroque churches, and an eclectic mix of remarkably well-preserved Spanish and Arabic architecture. At Camaguey’s main park, the Parque Ignacio Agramonte, visitors can admire the arresting beauty of the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús cathedral. Further south to the Plaza de San Juan de Dios is Camaguey’s most attractive colonial square, blessed with notable landmarks such as the Iglesia San Juan de Dios and the Museo de San Juan de Dios. Other activities include watching world-class performances at the Main Theater of Camaguey and getting a taste of local life at the popular Carmen Square.
