Set in the Barossa Valley region of South Australia, Tanunda is a relatively large rural settlement surrounded by seemingly endless vineyards. German Lutherans settled in the area in 1842 and this influence is still seen today in the town’s German sausage shops, German bakeries, German-style restaurants, and of course its many historic Lutheran churches. Begin your tour at the Barossa Wine and Visitor Centre (where you will find information on the town and the numerous excellent wineries of the area) before heading to the historic Post Office building, which has been converted into a small museum focused on the town’s history. Other must-see sites in the area include the Storybook Cottage and Whacky Woods, a tourist attraction focused on the characters of a number of well-known children’s books, and the Mengler’s Hill Lookout, offering panoramic views of the scenic vineyards and the valley below.
