The drive to Hermanus will take approximately 2 ½ hours, we take the scenic drive via Gordon’s Town and Pringle Bay. The large Walker Bay, where Hermanus is located, is the ideal place for whale watching, probably offering the best land-based whale watching opportunities in the world. Southern Right Whales and Humpback Whales often come as close to 50 meters from the shore, and they often give displays of breaching, lobtailing, spyhopping and courtship rituals. The peak whale season runs from June to mid December each year. We board a modern vessel specially built for whale-watching (weather permitting). The whale watching trip takes from 1 ½ hours to 3 hours maximum, depending where the whales are seen today. We spend some time with the whales, observing their behavior. The vessel’s permit entitles an approach up to 50 m from the whales, and we stop to observe. It is up to the whales to approach closer. Being naturally curious, they often come right up to the boat. Return to Hermanus, there will be free time to have lunch at one of the many outdoor restaurants (for own account) and also take a walk along the famous Cliff Path, on the lookout for more whales. We return to Cape Town via Sir Lowry’s Pass.
