Trip Summary

Roam Private Game Reserve is located on 5000 hectares of malaria-free scrubveld in the Great Karoo, an ancient and endless semi-desert landscape covering 400,000 square kilometres in its entirety. Endless horizons, brazen sunsets, star-studded night skies and the magic of the Great Karoo await your arrival.

The focus at Roam is on eco-tourism and providing visitors with the opportunity to experience a conscious safari in the remote wilderness of the Karoo. The team at Roam have many conservation initiatives that focus on rewilding the Great Karoo. Knowledgeable guides will take you on a once in a lifetime adventure tracking wild cheetah on foot through this vast and picturesque landscape.

Other notable species that can be spotted on wilderness walks and guided game drives include giraffe, buffalo, bat eared fox, zebra, kudu, springbok, gemsbok, ostrich, eland, meerkats and over 200 species of bird. You are encouraged to get involved in the conservation aspect of a safari, and enjoy activities such as mountain biking, sundowners and stargazing. There are two accommodation options to choose from, each catering for a different type of guest. These include: Roam Safari Lodge and Roam Explorer Camp.

Located a 5 - 6 hour drive from Cape Town and a mere 2 hour drive from George Airport and the Garden Route; means that Roam is perfectly placed for a safari add-on to a Route 62, Oudtshoorn, Cango Caves, Prince Albert and Swartberg Pass road trip.  The closest airport is the small airport of George, and the closest town is Beaufort West. The Route 62 route comes highly recommended, and to get there you will need to take the N1 north bound (Paarl, Worcester) and follow the Worcester/Robertson route. Although Route 62 is the most scenic route, it isn't the fastest route to Roam. The fastest route is on the N1 north bound (Paarl, Worcester, Laingsburg) towards Prince Albert.

Roam safari Lodge
Roam Safari Lodge offers its visitors a touch of country luxury in the heart of the arid Karoo region. The lodge has panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, and even has its own waterhole attracting a plethora of game. The lodge has that classic Karoo country feel, where simplicity and comfort provide an escape from the semi-desert environment cocooning the accommodation. 3 adjoining thatched roof houses surround a massive courtyard that cascades down to the lawns, wooden decked swimming pool area and small waterhole. The main area is perfect for relaxation, and even has a secluded lounge complete with a fireplace. There’s a second lounge and dining area that flows out onto the patio, where you’ll find a braai, dining table and seating area under the awning.

Roam Explorer Camp
Accommodation is in the form of dome tents constructed from sturdy canvas resting on raised wooden platforms. Tents are ideally located under a canopy of trees. The 5 explorer tents are situated around a central area housing the fire pit and an awning with a dining/seating area. The Explorer Camp allows you to immerse yourself in nature, while still enjoying the creature comforts of home. Roam Explorer Camp is a permanent, fully-set up camp in a dry riverbed with incredible views of the surrounding wilderness.  You will be looked after by experienced guides and hosts who will also take the time to share their in-depth knowledge of the Karoo with you. After a day spent exploring the spoils of the Great Karoo, guests have the option of sitting around the campfire to enjoy a relaxing evening under the stars.

Please Note: Explorer Camps annual closure months > Roam Explorer Camp is only operational / bookable over the following months: 1 March – 31 May & 1 Sept – 30 Nov.
