Day 2: Buenos Aires

Embark on a City Tour of Buenos Aires in the morning.

The tour starts from what is the second and most definitive capital of the area named Plaza de Armas in 1580 and today known as Plaza de Mayo, the historical, political and cultural centre of the city. The Pyramid de Mayo, which is in the centre, was the first national historical monument and was inaugurated in 1811.  In its surrounding areas you can see Casa Rosada  (Presidential Palace), the Cabinet, and the Metropolitan Cathedral.

The tour continues all the way to the neighbourhood of San Telmo, one of the oldest in the city, settled at the end of the XIX century by aristocratic families.  This neighbourhood retains its great architectural heritage. The area is also very active at night as it is the centre for most of the tango parlors, “tanguerias”, restaurants and bars. Going further south, arrive at the picturesque and colourful port neighbourhood of La Boca, with its famous street “Caminito” whose buildings and customs reflect the influence of European settlers that arrived at its shores during the XIX century and left their imprint not only in the multi-color houses still being used today but also in the cuisine of the typical “cantinas,” small restaurants.

Followed by this comes the modern neighbourhood of Puerto Madero, with its old piers converted into offices, apartments, places for entertainment and elegant restaurants, and its views of Rio de la Plata, a residential neighbourhood of Palermo with elegant mansions surrounded by spacious parks, finally arriving at La Recoleta.

Return to your hotel for a rest before enjoying Dinner and a Tango Show at La Ventana.

“La Ventana” has an appealing atmosphere where you can enjoy delicious local dishes-- especially beef chorizo {sausage} accompanied by an excellent wine -- and later enjoy the passion, the fire and the charm of the tango. In the style of the great orchestras of the 1940’s, this location invites a return to luxury with the excellent music of Buenos Aires.

Depart from the hotel towards the Perito Moreno Glacier, located in Glacier National Park. Upon leaving the city, along the right side of the road you can see Lake Argentino with Redonda Bay, which offers an interesting variety of bird life. At the entrance to the National Park there is a drastic change in the vegetation which is rich in the special types of trees found in the Patagonian Andes:  especially  ñires, lengas and cherry trees, among others.

Upon arrival be mesmerized by the Perito Moreno Glaicer. The glacier is an impressive river of ice with a surface of 257 square Kms; a length of 30 kms. and a width of 4 kms. The height of the front wall ranges between 50 and 60 meters above the level of the lake. In the central part of the glacier, the ice has a depth of between 250 and 350 meters. This frozen river descends from the continental ice field and causes in its slow progress landslides and explosions that make the glacier a wonder in constant motion. It is a show that impresses not only by its visual beauty, but also by the constant roar you hear from inside it, which has caused it to be declared a World Heritage Site.

During the tour a walk along the paths on the front of the glacier allow a view of this impressive natural marvel from a different perspective.  At the end of the tour, begin the return to Calafate to arrive at the hotel.
