Day 1 - 3

12 Jul 2025 - 14 Jul 2025

South Luangwa National Park

Day notes

This morning, make your way to Lusaka's airport to the domestic terminal 2 and check-in for your flight to South Luangwa's Mfuwe Airport.

A lodge guide will meet you there and transfer you to camp around 45 mins away. You are staying in their private villa, which has plenty of space and 3 rooms. You can also make use of the main camp area if you enjoy mingling with other travelers.

Spend the next 3 nights exploring the national park on game drives by day and night.

Typically on safari you will be woken up early, have a light breakfast with hot drinks, fruit, toast and snacks before heading out at first light. Depending on what you are seeing and conditions, you could spend between 3 – 4 hours before returning to camp for breakfast or brunch. Siesta through the middle of the day and then you may have lunch or a high-tea [each camp operates its own schedule], and then head out again in the afternoon between 3pm and 4pm. Afternoon game drives sometimes go on after dark, depending on park rules, so it is considered a night drive if you do go into the dark where you may view nocturnal creatures or even follow big cats on the hunt. [National Parks have gate times while private concessions do not] Return to camp around 7pm for dinner before heading back to your room for the night.

Day 4 - 5

15 Jul 2025 - 16 Jul 2025

South Luangwa National Park

Day notes

Your guide is likely to remain with you for the full five days.

A game drive transfer gets you from Kafunta River Lodge to Three Rivers lodge, set in a private part of the park.

The schedule is much the same as Kafunta except with this being a more private area of the park, it is ideal to enjoy safari walks, which I highly recommend. The rooms at Three Rivers also have sleep out decks which allow you to sleep under the stars at night.

Day 6 - 9

17 Jul 2025 - 20 Jul 2025

Lower Zambezi

Day notes

The lodge will advise you of the timing and transfer you back to Mfuwe in time for you to check-in for your flight down to Jeki airstrip, in the Lower Zambezi.

Your guide or someone from camp will meet you there and get you back to camp to settle in.

The boys are sharing a triple room here.

Set on the Zambezi River, Amanzi is a luxury camp offering a wide variety of experiences, from boat trips [with fishing] and canoe excursions to bush walks and game drives. This is a really beautiful place.

The day to day schedule is similar to Kafunta, but here you have the water and related activities to enjoy.

Expert tips:

Tipping your Safari Guide & other Service Providers in Africa

Tipping your guide/s or staff is usually considered customary in Africa but is always at your discretion, and only if you are totally satisfied. It is a delicate and sensitive issue and many people look for tipping guidelines.

Generally you would only tip at the end of your stay, on departure or final game drive. If you have an envelope, you can place the tip in that and give it to the relevant person/s.

We have quoted USD below, simply because it is a universal currency however all major currencies (Euro, GBP, USD) are accepted as well as local currency like Rands in SA or Namibian Dollars in Namibia. There is no need to exchange to local currency if you have foreign currencies.

Here's what we suggest as a minimum:

  • Transfer drivers: USD 2 - 5 per transfer
  • Lodge guides or city guides on full day trips: USD 15 per traveller per day
  • Trackers: USD 5 per traveller per day

Lodge staff: the easiest way to tip the lodge's cooks, housekeepers and porters is to use the staff tipping box - the contents of which are shared - at the end of your stay. Work on USD 15 per traveller per day. If there is someone who has really stood out and provided excellent service, you may want to tip him or her separately - simply put your tip in an envelope with the person's name on it or pass it on via the camp manager.

It is worth considering your tips at home and preparing to have enough smaller denominations of whatever currency you plan to use – change and smaller notes are unlikely to be available in remote parts of Africa.
